- M.A.N. Protesters Expected to be More of a Disturbance to New School Year Than Newcomers Themselves, Department of Education Says
Monday marks the beginning of a new school year for grades K-12, but the city school system is already anticipating an outcry which may threaten to delay school openings.
As grassroots organization Mothers Against Newcomers met yesterday to plan for rallies and protests outside of primary and secondary schools nearest the baseball diamond to keep these sector 4 schools “newcomer-free”, the head of the Sector 4 school district Benjamin Hoffersten is working with City Hall to pass an ordinance banning picket lines from forming within two blocks of any school zone, ensuring all students a safe arrival at school.
“Only a mere handful of young newcomers are registered and eligible to attend public schools this year” Principal Tarvel pointed out, “and while these students may require a little extra attention to adapt to our city’s school system and to catch up to speed (as they come from various backgrounds and levels of education) we don’t expect this to detract from any native child’s classroom experience.”
After the death of young newcomer Ritsuka Aoyagi last spring, suspected to be linked to bullying incidents, the school district has agreed to provide a special minibus to transport newcomers safely to and from school. M.A.N. is outraged at this development. The group has written over 75 angry letters to the district along with a petition of over 3000 signatures, demanding to know why newcomers are being offered extra provisions when few stick around to graduate, and school budgeting is already tight.
