[Not long after the video begins, it becomes clear this transmission was not made on purpose.  Seconds tick bye yet the feed remains black. However, though there are no images to entertain the would-be viewer, there is a cacophony of sound.

Somewhere nearby, children are screaming in terror while adults shout frantically. The reason for this chaos reveals itself in the form of a loud, monstrous hiss. Then, without warning, that unholy sound is replaced by the repeated boom of gunfire. The shooting seems to go on forever but in actuality only lasts a few seconds.]

Benedictus Deus.” [An unseen woman speaks, her voice tightly controlled.]Gloria Patri.” [These words are followed by one final shot.]

[Rustling fabric can be heard as the sound of crying grows louder and is joined by the muttered prayers of an unknown man.]

“You are safe now. That foul thing is dead.” [This declaration is made by the same woman as before, now speaking Italian-accented English.] “I will alert the authorities.”

“Thank you.” [When the man replies, his voice trembles from shock.]  “Sis--Sister.”

[Finally, the video switches from black to a bright, almost blinding light. It spins, images blurring, until coming to rest upon the face of a nun, her grim expression at odds with her apparent youth. It’s obvious she didn’t expect the feed to be active and is not pleased to learn is has been recording for some time.

The nameless nun stares silently before eventually deciding to addresses her audience. Instead of introducing herself or offering some other pleasantry, she rather curtly poses a question.]

“If we truly have nothing to fear from darkness-spawned demons during the day, then how does one explain this?”

[The video swings to display the serpentine body of a night naga, which lies still in the deep shade of an enormous oak tree.]

“Bad enough this abomination should dare to show its face in daylight. But to brazenly launch an attack on hallowed ground is an intolerable act of blasphemy.”

[The video spins again, focusing on a group of children being comforted by another nun. Beside this huddled mass is a priest who stares intently at the woman filming him. Judging by his expression, he might be more afraid of her than worried about the threat of further monster attacks. Beyond them all can be seen a small, unassuming church.]

“If this is your doing, Estacado, be assured I will find you and send you crawling back to the dark pit from whence you came.”

Guilt.

[He says it with almost a finality, as if the word itself is just enough to make people start thinking about it. In a way, that's exactly what he's going for. The last couple of weeks have been incredibly hard for some, what with the Culpa flu going around and enacting suffering and God knows what else upon the people of Siren's Port. Jacob looks weary, still recovering, but his blue eyes are bright again, and he stares at the camera, as if he can somehow see into the minds of everyone who is viewing this feed.]

I remember reading a book where someone said, "guilt is the price we pay willingly for doing what we are going to do anyway." But is that true? Why do we feel guilt in the first place?

[He sighs slightly.]

Some can go without guilt their entire lives, and they do not understand the pain that comes along with it. But is it a blessing, or is it a curse? Yes, guilt is painful, indeed, but one begs to wonder what we would do without it.

What does guilt mean to you? Is it a needless ache that you can go without, or does it serve some purpose for you that you wouldn't replace for the world? I know many of you felt guilt and regret the last few weeks, and it makes me wonder...Did this flu, this sickness, change any of your thoughts on it? Has it made you hate it more than you do now?

[He smiles slightly, even though it doesn't quite reach his eyes.]
I'm curious, really.

[ooc: Also, please please please fill out Jacob's permission post if you haven't done so yet! Thank you!]

[It’s been a long month, and Raul understands that. It’s all been tiring, and with everyone sick, not a lot of work has been able to get done. He’s been working around the clock, just as much as the doctors; perhaps not on the same thing, but in the end, work was work. He’s tired, but so long as everyone else is doing their part, he will do theirs.]

I almost forgot the anniversary of my arrival here. It’s been two years since I last saw my home, but in that time, I’ve come to consider Siren’s Port my true home. It’s a place that, while acknowledging its problems, does open its arms to everyone who arrives. I’m not talking about what the original citizens of the port say, nor what they do. But this city takes us in. It provides shelter even in the darkest of times. It gives us abilities, even when it doesn’t have to; in fact, this place could have taken away several abilities from Newcomers, and instead, they have enhanced them. This is a home to so many of us, and for some, it is our only true home, now.

So when something like this outbreak decimates, not only the Newcomer population, but the port’s population as well, there is a time for sadness. There is a time for grief. Everyone has faced tremendous adversity during this past month, whether it was from the disease itself, or from those who would have sooner let Newcomers die then help their fellow man. There is a cure out there, and we are not allowed to touch it until everyone else has gotten it. Even with this terrible news, I know something that the rest of the population doesn’t; I know that we can survive. I know that we as Newcomers will survive this, and find the will to live past what many hope will be our expiration date.

And that is cause for celebration. We are all alive, and we’re slowly on our way to recovery. This past month took us all into the darkest part of our souls, showing us what we fear, and what we thought we would never be able to move past. But we did. We did. And out of all this darkness, there needs to be a beacon of light. Something for people to look forward to.

[Gives the barest of smiles.]

And that’s what the Newcomer Political Party wants to give. A celebration, that we are all still here. I’m pleased to announce the first annual NPP Block Party. For those who don’t know what a block party is, I understand that feeling. I had no idea what it was until I looked it up, myself. But a block party is much like a carnival, or a fair; they close off a block or two, and set up stalls, stages, and games, for everyone to wander around at, and have fun. The simplest explanation is: We’re throwing a party. A big party. A party that everyone can come to, not just Newcomers.

This event will be taking place on June 7th, and going on till June 10th, and will be in the block that the Newcomer Community Center is at. Since we do have to be attentive of the Darkness, this party will start at 11 am, and go till two hours before sirens; that should give plenty of time for everyone to take down their stall, and put it all into storage at the community center, before the darkness comes. This is also why we’re holding it for four days; we want everyone to come and have fun, especially on days that they are free.

But, we need help. This won’t be able to take place unless we have people willing to help out. If you wish to help, know that you won’t be working every day of the block party; like I said before, we want everyone to come and have fun. But we’re looking for people willing to help set up, to run games, to provide entertainment on our stage, to give food, to help promote the block party, and to help organize it. The NPP is also offering a deal; if you or your business want, you can rent out a stall or two from us. With your stall, you can promote your business. You can hand out fliers, you can have games, you can give out items, or food, or anything you would like.

And yes. Alcohol will be served, for those who are of legal age. [Smirks.] I hope to see you all there. This is a celebration of life, and all of you deserve to have it.

[The NV clicks on to show the wide, predatory grin of a face some in the city may recognize. He looks perfectly healthy.]

Helllooo, Port, miss me?

Oh, no need to answer, I know you did!

[Joker's expression pulls into an overly theatrical frown as he swings the NV about, showing the chaotic interior of St. Teresa's Sanitarium. There are dead bodies strewn about the floor and the sound of shouting from down the hallway.]

A month-long entr'acte and while I'm gone this whole dismal burg just sinks into despair!

[The camera focuses on his face again as he throws his head back with his hand against his brow]

So I thought to myself: "Joker, old boy, your public needs you! Time to skedaddle and turn some frowns upside down!" Then, lucky me, the guard came to get me for group therapy! Guess nobody told him that the hardcore psychotics don't do group. Or maybe he forgot, eh?

[At this the NV swings towards Larry Butz who's curled up in the corner.]

Hey, smile for the camera, comrade! And on your feet! Make with the magic or you'll be tying your shoelaces with your teeth!

[A sharp bark of laughter]

Aaah, this is gonna be such fun!

[Back to Joker as he waves]

See you all on the outside, squares! And don't go dying on me, mmmkay? Daddy doesn't want to play to a buncha corpses just yet.

As everyone is delicately tip-toeing around what a few select people have figured out, let me spell it out for you, for the individuals who lack the brain cells to rub together.

It's guilt. The feelings of guilt. Decisions that you regret. Things you've done that you wish you could have done differently. That is what is causing you all to be so sick, why certain people are targeted and certain people are supposedly immune.

If anything, you should stop feeling sorry for yourselves and start wondering why, exactly, some people are so healthy. Those are probably the people you should be watching warily -- because I doubt they're all saints.

In other news, Castiel is in a coma, which I'm sure is a grand surprise to all that know him and have connected piece A with piece B. Stop texting him and calling him. I'm going to feed the NV to my dog shortly if it keeps going off.

The first person to suggest that I take him to a hospital will have their throat cut.

Continue panicking at your leisure. I am going to return to my work.

[Chuck, to put it delicately- he looks like shit. Warmed-over horse manure. Pale, sweating, shaking, lips chapped, breathing a little labored- he's obviously extremely sick. Despite this, he isn't in a hospital, but his own home. And despite this, he rubs his hands together, licks his lips, and manages to look a little lively.]

Okay, so- [Hold on, coughing.] I've been thinking.

[He backs off a little, revealing something shocking: he's in the wheelchair he was in for three months, that he hasn't touched in almost eight. It's a hover-chair, as some might remember- hovering two feet off the ground. There's an IV drip attached to it, hooked to Chuck's arm.]

I mean... we're all pretty much sick now. People are dying. It's awful. But you know, I think one of the worst things about plagues - [ha ha another horrible, hacking, rough coughing fit!] - fuck, is- the emotional aspect of it, you know? The isolation.

Millions of people died in Europe, but I bet almost none of them wanted to talk about it. Why... why would they. Everyone was suffering the same. Nobody wanted to just whine. But that doesn't mean that all the things bothering us just go away. We don't just lose our albatrosses because we got sick.

They say stress can affect your body. Being stressed or alone can make you die younger.

[You see, Chuck knows what the plague is. Thanks to an extremely helpful angel, he knows how to cure it. He knows He can cure it. It's not like He even has a choice about this- it's more like a calling. An obligation. There has to be a reason He went from healthy to throwing up and passing out within six hours, right? Clearly, Chuck has some shit He feels guilty about. And if there was ever a time to let loose some of that walled-up Power... it'd be now.

After all, they say only God can forgive.]

Maybe it's not the way to go. Maybe one way to help get through this is to not wall ourselves off like that- you know?

I mean, whatever happens... there aren't any new experiences or. or original thoughts. Whatever's tormenting you, there's someone out here who gets it.

There's always someone who can understand.

[ There's quite the text out there on the network tonight, Siren's Port, from a person who wishes to keep their identity quite under wraps. The anonymous communication is sent just as the sirens end, punctuating the alert for anyone looking over the feed. ]

A cage. That's what I'd call it. A well erected one with all the toysies we could hope for, all the people to make it feel like you never left, all the corruption of home... and then some.

A little birdy and her lovely pamphlet told me there's a secrets most people are keeping. Some of them don't even realize it. That everyone here is a little more than ordinary.

I disagree. Most people are ordinary or striving to be normal. Average. Mediocrity is soooooo fashionable.

B O R I N G

I wonder, could anyone really want to embrace anything more?

I'd like to talk to anyone who isn't sick yet, especially if you've been in direct contact with people showing symptoms.
