[ Here's William T. Spears. He hasn't been around all that much lately. Seems that with the majority of his coworkers returning home, he has reverted to his old reclusive ways. ]

As I am sure a few of you have noticed, Grell Sutcliff is no longer in Port. He is not dead this time. His NV is disconnected so I am certain he has been sent home.

[ There's no sadness in his voice. Why? Because the point of this post is not to grieve. It's a business post. And there's no emotion necessary for that. ]

Since he is no longer here, I am looking to sell his photography studio, as well as all of the photography equipment contained there in. The studio is located in Sector 4, is in excellent condition and is fairly well equipped.

[ Hey all you past customers who got their pictures (perhaps nude ones?) taken by the mild mannered "Eric Sligby"... yeah that photographer wasn't who you thought he was. ]

I will also consider renting the lot.

Please contact me with your offer or if you would like to set up arrangements to view the studio or the equipment.

Thank you.

I kind of didn't believe it when someone first suggested it to me, because it seemed so surprising, but it's really true! You can actually make money sitting and playing music!

[This afternoon, Emil sounds quite excited, and maybe even a little proud of himself, which usually only happens when he's made an awful joke.]

Today I went by a place I like to go to sometimes, because I like to get biscotti when I can and the granny's really nice. I didn't realize until going a couple times that they have a piano there, but apparently people sit and play it once in a while, as long as they aren't too loud about it or anything. You know, like background music? Well, this time I asked Granny if I could use it, too... and she said it was okay, so I got to sit and play. It's been a while since I was able to, so I was really glad.

But when I was finished and went to leave, someone said, Wait, you forgot this, and he gave me a cup. Well, people had put money in the cup for me while I was playing. And it's a lot more than I thought anyone would want to give for something like this, too. Some of them asked me if I was peeking, but I promised I wasn't. I guess it was like a reward? It's funny, because music isn't a job, but they acted like it was. It's cool, though! I think I'll go back next week, too.

It feels like every day, this place gets a little less scary. And 'a little less' means it's still pretty big, but I'm glad, too. I'm glad I went out today. It feels like doing that once in a while is okay after all.

Um, well, a lot of the people I've talked to here have been encouraging to me, so I wanted to say thank you. It's like you've all been lending me a little of your courage. I'll return it if I can. So take care!
seclusion: (such a pretty garden.)
[personal profile] seclusion
Um, hello! I mean, 'good morning!' I wanted to say hi...

Oh, and a couple of other things, too. Well, I went out front a little bit ago. It was pretty nice! The weather here is a bit nippy, but... [He sighs, refreshed-sounding, and there's a little tapping noise like - like he might be patting his cheeks.] It feels good on my face. I should probably find a coat, though... Oh, anyway, while I was out, I found some birds, I think four of them, hopping around on their little bird feet. [He laughs.] At least, I thought they were birds, but while I was feeding them some soda crackers, this old lady came out nearby and said, "Don't feed those! They'll never leave!" [His imitation of the woman's voice is gravelly and probably awful.] I asked her, "Do you want them to leave?" and she said, "They're rats on wings!"

Wow. I didn't even know that rats could have wings. I think rats are okay, but I guess I can see she wouldn't want them around, and they're probably good enough at finding food on their own. Still, I was really surprised, rats on wings! There wasn't anything like that at home. So it really made me think...

I decided that I wish I could know about all these worlds. All these lands and cities, and birthplaces and homes. There are so many more than I ever thought I'd wonder about. My home is on a plain, with rocks and plants and I think trees, and some flowers, and a wide, wide sky overhead. There aren't any people around for a while; it's just my house, that's all. But this is such a big city, and I realized that a lot of you probably came from those, or came from places by the sea, or in deep forests or on high mountains. I thought that was amazing. My butler's read to me about places like this, but just because I tried to sniff the salt shaker doesn't mean I know what it's like to smell the sea air. [He's laughing again, a short sound with a lot of mirth.]

And I also know that some of you came from places that are very dirty or sad... Burned down places or places without plants. I mean, I don't know that for sure, but I bet it's true. Still, even a place like that... People are born there, so they're places full of life. Um, maybe I'm just getting a lot of perspective here or something! But there are a whole lot of lives and they're all crashing into each other here and now. Isn't that so weird? But cool!

I thought I was going to make a better point than this, but I didn't end up doing it. I guess the best thing I can say is a question:

If you don't mind, would you have a little bit of time to tell me a picture of a place you like? Thanks for listening!
seclusion: (the silence is loud.)
[personal profile] seclusion
He— ...Hello? [This most hesitant of greetings comes from a young boy, from the sound of things. There's a sizeable pause before he says anything else, but no outside noises come through in the interim.]

I'm sorry - I hope this is working... I was told how to use this, but I can't see it to check for sure. I guess we'll see if I'm doing this right... Or, at least, you will. [Beat for comedic timing.

He continues on like he didn't just make a really awful joke, but his voice sounds a little more lighthearted, now, soft-spoken though he is.]
Um, this place isn't anything like I'm used to. I was a little confused, because right when I came here, I could tell it was crowded, and I didn't expect that at all. But I talked to a Greeter! He was really nice, and he helped explain things to me. I don't think I've ever heard of Canada, let alone Siren's Port, but it's really something... isn't it?

Anyway... my name is Emil. The Greeter was kind enough to lead me to the building I'll be staying in, so I was able to settle in already. [That was a bit of an ordeal.] Even so, it's going to take a lot of getting used to. Normally, my butler helps me out... [With things like cooking, cleaning, and... getting dressed, because... eyes.] I - I guess I've got a lot of catching up to do. It's weird how you never fully realize how much you rely on someone until you have to start thinking how to get along without them, don't you think? Oh, but...! [That's the sound of someone recognizing they've gotten sidetracked and remembering to get back to the task at hand.] The Greeter explained a little bit of how things work, here, too. I'm going to need to earn money for food and clothing and other important things, aren't I? He said it might be best to ask, um, 'my fellow Newcomers.'

[A deep breath.]

So, I wanted to ask about - jobs, I guess. And what kinds of jobs people do, and offer, and what you need to be able to do them... I've never had a job. [He does sound a little sheepish.] Sebastian always takes care of everything, and if I'm not in my home, I don't get around very easily unless I'm with a friend. So I haven't developed very many skills... I mean, I can play piano, and I can, um... turn things into stone... [For the first time, his voice is a little bit distressed.] I don't think you can do those things for money, though.

Sorry, this is kind of troubling. Some guys offered me a money loan, but I was reluctant to take it since I was in a hurry to get inside. [Sensory overload. Going from recluse to smack dab in the middle of a city was pretty startling.] If there's anything I can do, I'll be glad to try it... I don't think Sebastian anticipated me being without him or my friends, or he'd have prepared me for this kind of thing. Just - if you have any suggestions, I'd be really grateful. Really, really grateful.

—Thank you very much. I really hope that thing was on this whole time.

Hello, hello, hello! This is very important! Everyone STOP what you're doing and listen! There's no telling how ~long~ this will last, so I need to know:

How do I get pregnant IMMEDIATELY?

[ Almost as an afterthought: ]

Oh - and I'll need a father, too! If there are any actual men left in this city. My MAN is MISSING something critical--

Please let me be explicitly clear on this: I really don't want any sympathies, or to talk about my feelings on the matter. I can see a professional for that.

I just want to get my head out of work for a little awhile.

I know I have not made myself present for the newcomer community in some time, and for that I do need to apologize. I've been very occupied. I've had some projects to finish anyway, and I am fine.

I only need a change of scenery, and I don't really want to go alone.

I'm well aware that this is a most unorthodox and open way of asking, if you'll please forgive me, fellow newcomers. I am alarmingly inept at making social appointments; I always let him take care of it. I can't do that anymore, and I need to do something with myself beyond occupational diversions. I'm not so certain what I'm even asking for, just any excuse to break the cycle.

[ I sound thoroughly mad, Daedalus realizes in yawning surprise, hollow-eyed and vacant when he sits back heavily at his desk and reads this message over to himself half a minute later. [The bandages have long been removed, the bones set and wounds tended to and healed but the Kaiji onscreen is distinctly different. The remaining scars from the Hunt appear to be mental, left in bruise-like shadows under his eyes and a new hardness in the line of his mouth. And yet it’s more than that- he seems to bristle with energy, energy that he struggles to keep under control as he talks.

In the weeks since it happened, he’s been doing a lot of thinking and he’s finally ready to speak out. His voice trembles with anger and bitterness.]

Survival of the fittest. The natural order. Is that what I’m supposed to call it? Human nature? “Human nature” is clawing your way to the top of a pile of fucking bodies so that you don’t have to rot at the bottom with the scum.

[He hasn’t felt this passionate in a while and the sheer rush of it courses through him like liquid metal. It’s not just in his tone- as he speaks, his gestures are aggressive, almost like he’s readying himself for a fight. Fists clenched so that the tendons bulge, shoulders squared, head held up high and fiercely proud.

He slams a fist on the table with such force that it makes a static buzz on the feed’s sound.]
And you know what? Once you’re there the smell isn’t so bad and the blood on your hands stops looking so bright because you don’t need to think about it. Everyone you crawled over stops being human- who gives a shit what happened to them, huh? No one. And I’m so fucking naïve that I had to learn that all over again since coming here.

Who’s gonna miss something that never even had a place in society in the first place? Who’s gonna miss living trash? [a harsh laugh] So, is that how they saw it?! Doing the world a favour and washing away all the garbage? Us Newcomers… we’re not people, right? So why should it be murder?

[His gaze doesn’t falter even for a second.]

Dress it up however you want, there’s still a mountain of corpses beneath everyone who turned up to that goddamn Hunt and swept it away like it was nothing. Hope they’re enjoying the view.

Fuck them all to hell.

[ The feed starts with William facing the screen. He was about to post to the network about something boring, presumably, but before he even starts, his attention is drawn off screen. There's the faint sound of meowing and scratching. ]

Alright, hold on. I will let you in.

[ He's addressing one of his cats, the one they had named after their coworker, Ronald Knox. The feline had asked to go outside earlier and has, apparently, returned from his outing.

The video gets a little shaky as William attempts to hold the NV in one hand and open the door with the other. ]

Did you at least enjoy yourself--what is that?

[ Seems Little Ronnie decided to bring his daddy a present. Such a suck up, just like the real Ronald. Except instead of nice cup of coffee during a busy work day, Little Ronnie has brought William his latest catch...

A pigeon.

And if you have ever gotten on the topic of birds with William, you would be well aware of how much he respects the creatures - and would have liked to own one again, if he were not already housing three cats.

William places the NV down on the floor and begins to scold the cat. All within plain view of the NV screen - which he's forgotten is recording, by this point. ]

No. Bad Ronnie. Put the pigeon down this instant.

DOWN. NOW.

[ Finally the bird is released, but not because William commanded. No, it's because now it's time to play with his catch! Little Ronnie begins to bat his toy around, showing his daddy just how fun his new present is! But William will have none of that, and scoops the bird up. It's alive, but badly injured.

As William fusses, Ronnie can be seen following the movement of the bird in William's hands, tail flicking eagerly. ]

Do not look at me like that. This bird should not have been harmed simply because you were bored and needed something to play with. Now I need to locate a veterinarian.

[ Finally remembering his NV, William snatches it up and clicks the feed off, not really noting or caring that it had been recording. There are more important things to tend to right now! ]

[The feed turns on, and everyone can see Raul Creed sitting down. Shockingly enough, he's not behind a desk, or anywhere that looked like an office. Instead, he's sitting on the couch. Just like a normal person who didn't work every minute of every day.]

We've seem to be receiving new members of the Newcomer community, in the past few weeks, and I wanted to take the time to welcome them. There's many of you who have been welcomed with open arms by the rest of us, and I do want to say that, despite the circumstances, it is nice to meet you. [Except you, Vincent Law. It's not nice to meet you, again.] My name is Raul Creed. I'm general manager of Lion's Gate, a club in the city; most importantly, I am the head of the Newcomer Political Party, which is based out of the Newcomer Community Center. Our offices are open from 9:00am to 5:00pm, and we encourage everyone to come in. There are many different groups that meet in the community center, and the NPP is always looking for more people to help with our cause. Our new director, Vesper Lynd, and our new Assistant Director, Kurt Hummel, will be happy to help you in whatever it is you may wish to do.

In mentioning the help we give, and the causes we are fighting for, I must bring up again the problems we have faced in the past few weeks. We've already had many people on the network tell us what has happened in regards to this "Newcomer Hunt". I want to formally state that the Newcomer Political Party is shocked and outraged at the very idea of this atrocity. There is not much more I can say on the subject that has not already been said by many, many others. What I do want you all to know is that we will not stand by and let this go unpunished. Newcomer might be what we're called in this city, but one life is not, nor has it ever, been worth more then another. Regardless of your age, gender, sexuality, race; we are all equal. I urge those of you thinking of using violence to make a statement to reconsider. Fighting fire with fire may sound interesting, but when the island is completely burned down, there will be nowhere for us to go. There will be nowhere for the people who are not guilty of any crimes, to go.

We strive for equality, not supremacy. And if you want to help in that, then speak up. The Newcomer Political Party holds an open forum meeting every few months, where people can come in and speak up about problems that are affecting them. Problems that are affecting all of us. We need to make decisions and come up with plans as a community. The open forum meeting will be taking place this month, on July 17th, at 1:00pm. That's next Tuesday. I'm hoping that the rate of new people coming into the city will have slowed down, by then, because I want every single one of you to show up. I want you to speak up. If no one will speak up, if no one will take the risk, then nothing will get done. If nothing gets done, I hope no one dares to show outrage; you could have made a difference.

[He pauses at that. Raul Creed is not one to show emotion. It's not how he was brought up. But there's a fire, a passion in his eyes and on his face, and he needs to look down for a moment. When he looks back up, he's back to calm again.]

For some of you, the port is a place you had no choice to come to. For others, it's a vacation from the problems back home. For me, this island is my home. There is nothing for me or my daughter to go back home to. We have set roots down in this city, and I know there are others who have, as well.

[He holds up a piece of paper; it's a document signed by the government.] Today, my family legally grew by one more. Nana is not from the same world as I am, and I had never known about her until we met in this city. I am proud to be her caregiver, and both Pino and I are happy that she is a part of our small, but growing family.

[He smiles.] When I woke up today, I wanted to just say welcome to our newest members. To let you all know that we are asking for your voice. Now, I hope that my family, and yours, can continue to grow safely.

...And of course, if you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask. My NV is always open for calls.

Wanted to throw a question out there. When do you forgive someone? [a pause- it’s not really his place to do the forgiving in this situation] Or… when do you turn a blind eye to something… something fucked up? What if they’ve done their time for it? What circumstances make it…

[He trails off. It used to be so simple. Coming here had complicated matters- he still didn’t know where he stood with Tonegawa but it hadn’t mattered before. They were never supposed to see each other again. Even here, their past was a largely taboo subject, never to be spoken out loud but ever present in resentful undertones and snipes. Even so, a small part of him was disturbed by how lacking in intensity his hatred of the other man was- and even more so by the tinier part of him that respected him in spite of everything.

And now… now he can’t stop himself making the connections, asking the same uncomfortable questions; is he a hypocrite if he forgives one but not the other? Does it matter if they’ve changed? Why they did it? Does it ever go away?]

This city...

The utter lack of planning for the future of its citizens is ever just-so-slightly disconcerting, troubling enough to bring me around and back to it again and again.

I do consider in stride that Romdeau, the city I've come from, was rigidly modeled and structured. That no single entity beyond the administrative body was permitted to extend its influence wildly over the population. But I also have to consider its ultimate crippled fate, for over-reliance on automated management. The dearth of options and openness, and what was sacrificed for order and a peaceable system. Still, I often hesitate to call it better or worse here.

And yet... there are small encounters which leave a man questioning these things, constantly. I don't speak about them over the network much, because it doesn't really suit the daily, casual discussions the newcomer community carries on here. Not everyone cares for speaking about societies. That and my, ah- unique perspective usually requires a good deal of preliminary explanation.

Still. It's good to hear some fresh opinions. There are some newer arrivals I haven't spoken with yet, or seen at the clinic.
