- Controversy is already brewing over a new reality show that's begun filming AGI's reality TV and game show network, Realivision. The show is called "Not Always Right", slated to premiere in the fall on Sunday nights. The series director, Melody Ahn, explains the concept:
"Everyone's looking to save some money, considering the financial strife and limited resources of our island city. It's not surprising that local businesses, TV shows, blogs and even news and magazines have brought in a focus not only of discounts and couponing, but receiving customer service. But what about what goes on behind the counter? Everyone wants to get a deal and everyone wants to be treated well, but all too often we forget that we're dealing with live people with feelings. My sister-in-law has been a manager at a store in the underground mall for a decade, and the stories she tells would shock you. There are real stories there, stories anyone who's worked with the public can relate to. And if you haven't worked with the public, then this show might just teach you a thing or two about how not to behave."
The reality is already receiving criticism in many entertainment blogs - especially the ones of the 'coupon clipping' and 'customer rants' kind - for its portrayal of consumers as shrill, greedy, rude and stupid. The teaser clips include a shouting match between woman with a binder full of photocopied coupons and a middle manager, a cashier calmly asking a young man not to place his infant on the register conveyer belt, and a woman and her five young children being busted for shoplifting a dozen bags full of make up and electronics. Though the show has yet to air, there are already reports of customers agreeing to interviews without fully understanding the concept of the show, upset at being portrayed so negatively.
Ahn says that she strove to portray all of the footage and interviews in the most straightforward and honest way possible, with little scripting and none of the misleading gimmicks of reality TV. "The tantrums and entitled tirades don't need any extra adornment. I couldn't fabricate this kind of stuff if I tried."
As for the accusation that "Not Always Right" is an attack and insult to all consumers at a time when consumer confidence is frail, she says, "That's not my intention. But hey, if you want to picket my studio, go for it! You could give those newcomers a break and really boost my ratings."
- Lake Versaid Park Presents: Summer Jazz Festival & Water World, all weekend long at the park. This just occurred to me, but how about a fair of sorts as summer is kicking up to high gear? Water slides and diving platforms will be erected, along with an underwater moonbounce and pedal boat bumpercars, with a cardboard boat race sunday afternoon. Live performances at the bandshell by featured local jazz groups run all weekend long, from Solo Artists to Trios and Big Bands! Come out and plan to spend the day!
Pre-packed deluxe picnic basket lunches for the event can be picked up at the Siren’s Port Vinyards tent, including a tasting for two of artisan breads, cheeses, Grayson’s Orchard seasonal fruits, and a bottle of refreshing strawberry blush wine just for the occasion! Pre-Order yours now for $150 a basket! This special package is limited.
