- Can Binge Drinking Really Make You Norm?
We’ve all had that hangover from hell that leaves you feeling powerless and putrid the morning after. But could there be truth to this popular urban myth about the consumption of too much alcohol? Several studies have shown that inebriation is the leading cause of accidents by misuse of special abilities, and that loss of motor control and mental capacity has left many suffering the “Sunday Morning Null”.

However, a recent article out of Hawthorne University’s Campus Newspaper notes that over the past few weeks, several summer term students have reported partying hard at nearby clubs and bars, passing out, and waking up with a complete and irrecoverable loss of their powers. Several of these students, who have chosen to remain anonymous, failed to initially come forward until two undergraduate fraternity brothers agreed to get tested for severe concussion and potential permanent brain damage.

As more collegiates admitted to having similar trouble, Hawthorne’s Dean of Students has sent out NV-mail to all students and faculty, addressing problems with responsible consumption of alcohol and a declaration that they will tighten policy on hazing rituals.

In the meantime, the AGI Beverage Control Board has released a public statement that “there are currently research which confirms that drinking causes permanent powers impairment in any way. Still, we encourage our loyal consumers to enjoy responsibly.”

- Siren’s Port Farmer’s Market is hosting a Watermelon Carving Contest, judging will take place today at 4pm. The top three winners for most unique design wil get tol take home a free 15 lb organic watermelon from the market every week until the end of summer, as well as have their carving featured in AGI’s upcoming “Food Porn” weekend (July27-29th), celebrating culinary presentation, edible centerpieces, cake decorating and sugar sculpture, along with the irresistibly delicious work of the Port’s best food stylists and photographers.

[It's a sleep rumpled Loki, sitting up in bed, the NV floating in front of his face.]

One would think that by literally kicking the sandman in his sack- by 'the sandman' I mean Nightmare and by 'his sack' I mean his newly forged magic crown- that I would be granted a reprieve from terrible dreams and given only the good kind involving magic and all of the shaken milk I could drink.

Terrance, when next you speak to your father, do inform him of the wonderful Midgardian invention called a dance belt. With his penchant for tight, sparkly jumpsuits, it was rather like a hitchhiker's thumb, and a second navel.

Loki out!

[The microphone rustles on to a light hiss of breeze and distant city sounds from an open window. One can just about hear fingers skidding across buttons, manipulating the NV. And then, almost from nowhere, it begins:

Ko… ho…

Ko… ho… ko… ho…

A slow, heavy, mechanical breathing- air forced across metal vents and through steely chambers, released in a guttural rush.

It’s difficult to imagine it coming from anything living, but there’s also something off-puttingly human about it in its steady regularity, like the pulse of a heart. The sound continues for around a minute before catching, just for a second, and then being suddenly and unceremoniously switched off mid-breath.

Around twenty minutes later, a text message appears on the network.]

[A very neat, red-headed teenager gazes at the screen, with the basic, spartan floorplan of a Towers apartment behind him. Strangely, the typically run-down room looks immaculate. And not just as though it's been cleaned, but as though it never got dirty in the first place. The colors of the old wall paper - and it is the old pattern, not anything adding during the refurbishing - are as bright and clear as if it were put up yesterday. The little cracks in the walls and old stains on the flooring are nowhere to be found.]

Uh, hi everybody?

[awkward wave]

I'm Dillon. Newbie, but I'm starting to get a sense of how things work here. Is there a junkyard or vehicle impound or anything like that around? I'm thinking about fixing something up for a project.

And, okay, this might seem like a weird question, but have any of you been to a place that was just...endless red sand, and weird detritus from different places and times, and maybe an ocean slowing pouring in from a hole in the sky?

Yeah, I know, crazy acid trip stuff, right? But I'd appreciate knowing if that sounds familiar to anybody. Thanks.

[Some of Dillon's infomoddy type powers will work to a limited extent over the NV, so please glace over his permissions post. You don't have to fill out the whole thing if you don't want to, but if you're replying by voice or video, I'd really appreciate a quick ooc note about what it is/isn't okay for him to learn. Thanks a million, guys.]

[Eric looks like he's lost weight. But, he looks content enough.]

No, I haven't been on the network for a little while. That's right.

I'm fine. I've just been spending some time at home.

[He flips it off.

He doesn't know a lot of people in the port, but he should at least explain his silence. With Alan there he has little interest in anything outside their apartment anyway.]

[Dorian is smoothing his hair as the video starts. Then, he turns to the camera. His expression is worried.]

I'm afraid I have a problem. It appears I've got a darkness leak in my apartment. It's slight. It basically just looks like rot and mildew that gets much worse at night. It doesn't penetrate my closet door at this point. Still, I'd like to get it fixed.

Does anyone know someone who does this kind of work? Please?

[It's been a while since she's really been on the network, and though she still doesn't know about Xion's panicked call from a month ago, she's been laying low in general. Little by little she's been trying to become more sociable, especially now that school  and her exams are finished.

So now she's focusing on something else, and it's come to her attention as she sits in a chair at Kahve, that it's been about a year already.]

Newcomers are coming in again. Hopefully things will be a little easy for them as they settle in.

But, I just have a question for those that have been here longer. Have your goals or dreams changed so much since you got here? Did you achieve things you never would have dreamed of?

[She's feeling sentimental, but thinking about the year she spent and all the things she's done now, it's got her thinking about other people too.]

[The feed turns on, and everyone can see Raul Creed sitting down. Shockingly enough, he's not behind a desk, or anywhere that looked like an office. Instead, he's sitting on the couch. Just like a normal person who didn't work every minute of every day.]

We've seem to be receiving new members of the Newcomer community, in the past few weeks, and I wanted to take the time to welcome them. There's many of you who have been welcomed with open arms by the rest of us, and I do want to say that, despite the circumstances, it is nice to meet you. [Except you, Vincent Law. It's not nice to meet you, again.] My name is Raul Creed. I'm general manager of Lion's Gate, a club in the city; most importantly, I am the head of the Newcomer Political Party, which is based out of the Newcomer Community Center. Our offices are open from 9:00am to 5:00pm, and we encourage everyone to come in. There are many different groups that meet in the community center, and the NPP is always looking for more people to help with our cause. Our new director, Vesper Lynd, and our new Assistant Director, Kurt Hummel, will be happy to help you in whatever it is you may wish to do.

In mentioning the help we give, and the causes we are fighting for, I must bring up again the problems we have faced in the past few weeks. We've already had many people on the network tell us what has happened in regards to this "Newcomer Hunt". I want to formally state that the Newcomer Political Party is shocked and outraged at the very idea of this atrocity. There is not much more I can say on the subject that has not already been said by many, many others. What I do want you all to know is that we will not stand by and let this go unpunished. Newcomer might be what we're called in this city, but one life is not, nor has it ever, been worth more then another. Regardless of your age, gender, sexuality, race; we are all equal. I urge those of you thinking of using violence to make a statement to reconsider. Fighting fire with fire may sound interesting, but when the island is completely burned down, there will be nowhere for us to go. There will be nowhere for the people who are not guilty of any crimes, to go.

We strive for equality, not supremacy. And if you want to help in that, then speak up. The Newcomer Political Party holds an open forum meeting every few months, where people can come in and speak up about problems that are affecting them. Problems that are affecting all of us. We need to make decisions and come up with plans as a community. The open forum meeting will be taking place this month, on July 17th, at 1:00pm. That's next Tuesday. I'm hoping that the rate of new people coming into the city will have slowed down, by then, because I want every single one of you to show up. I want you to speak up. If no one will speak up, if no one will take the risk, then nothing will get done. If nothing gets done, I hope no one dares to show outrage; you could have made a difference.

[He pauses at that. Raul Creed is not one to show emotion. It's not how he was brought up. But there's a fire, a passion in his eyes and on his face, and he needs to look down for a moment. When he looks back up, he's back to calm again.]

For some of you, the port is a place you had no choice to come to. For others, it's a vacation from the problems back home. For me, this island is my home. There is nothing for me or my daughter to go back home to. We have set roots down in this city, and I know there are others who have, as well.

[He holds up a piece of paper; it's a document signed by the government.] Today, my family legally grew by one more. Nana is not from the same world as I am, and I had never known about her until we met in this city. I am proud to be her caregiver, and both Pino and I are happy that she is a part of our small, but growing family.

[He smiles.] When I woke up today, I wanted to just say welcome to our newest members. To let you all know that we are asking for your voice. Now, I hope that my family, and yours, can continue to grow safely.

...And of course, if you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask. My NV is always open for calls.

[The video feed opens up to something colorful and blurry. Soon, the video autofocuses and one can see a pair of bird's legs walking across the keyboard of a laptop. A disgruntled 'no' comes from somewhere in the room and soon a whistle follows. The bird moves away from the camera, climbing onto a finger. Lisbeth is soon in the video feed as she lifts Walt to her shoulder. Oblivious to the video, she opens up a math book and scribbles away inside.]

[When the video first flickers on, a pink-haired girl is standing some distance away from it in a small, dark apartment, presumably the starter apartments. In the background, you can hear the roar of a car's engine, but the source is unknown. It's the only noise in the room besides the sound of movement.]

Hello! I'm Utena Tenjou and I'm--well, one of the newcomers.

[Here, Utena starts doing lunges, talking while she does so.]

If anyone on the network has a free sword, please let me know! And while I'm thinking of it, is there a basketball court here? Or a volleyball court? Anything is good, I guess, but it doesn't look like the Baseball diamond is open for business right now!
