- Eyesore Or Art?

A long-time abandoned house near Hawthorne University has been purchased by local artist Aaron Kim for what he calls "a city wide art collaboration project." While he was an art student at Hawthorne 10 years ago Kim made waves with his radical street art and installments. These days Kim's better-known for his popular gallery showings, and a growing interest in photography and short film. With permission from the neighborhood association and some juggling of zoning permits, Kim has set up cameras all over the house and encourages artists of all kinds to make their mark on the building. "It was already a target for vandals and badly damaged in places from the darkness. Whether it becomes beautiful or falls apart, I want to see the way this building evolves."

Critics of Kim and of AGI argue that he will be making money off of other people's forms of expression. Kim stresses that this is not the case, and while he will be collecting money for any subsequent book deals or gallery showings, that the lion's share of the profits will go to charity. In one interview, Kim implied he was interested in giving some money to newcomers, since "Since this batch came around the last few years, I've seen some pretty interesting things." He quickly amended that with, "We'll see how it goes, though. Who knows, they might not even appreciate the hand-out."

Yet more critics complain that Kim is encouraging risky behavior, that artists will attempt to navigate a condemned building, possibly even risking the darkness to do so.

Perhaps the loudest complaints are from the neighbors to the house: "I just think it's ugly," says Sarah Mallory Baker-Hughes, who lives next door. "I've lived here for forty years and I've never seen such nonsense. The folks who lived here all died, you know. Nice family. Their beloved home deserves a better legacy than being treated the same as some dirty underpass.I thought whoever bought that property would tear it down, not make things even worse."
