Friendly Forecasts: Is Eternal Sunshine Worth Your Tax Dollars?A group of weather manipulators gathered this morning to rally at City Hall, lobbying for the creation of jobs as public climate controllers. Since being denied after multiple petitions and calls to the governor's office, they have made vaguely implied threats to exert their power over the Port’s weather in detrimental ways within the month, if their demands for official, well-paying civic jobs are not met.
While no legislation against the use of such powers exist, due to the energy demanded of exerting their will over the clouds, most weather manipulators will limit their influence to controlling an ideal set of environmental conditions over their personal property, or their path of morning commute.
“Sure, working together and in organized shifts, we could give the city a sunny day just because we’re feeling nice and generous!” says Susie Lansky (35), who also works as an outdoor party planner. “I’ve been privately contracted by the Fairgrounds to make sure raindates aren’t necessary for 5 years! Collaborating as workers for the city, we could really create the ideal climate for Port residents, year round- for what it’s worth, of course. Townshed can surely squeeze a dime in our direction to banish natural weather disasters from the city limits, forever.”
Choosing World Meteorological Day as their rallying point, their proposal printed on signboard and leaflets, the group is collecting petition signatures outside of the Underground Mall and other public places with heavy foot-traffic.
Of course, not everyone is on board with this plan. Governor Townshed calls the proposal “Impractical rubbish," and points to the City Council of 1949, where a similar proposal went into effect for a balmy blue skied summer of so-called perfect weather, leaving a crew of ten Weather Watchers to keep Siren’s Port in a pre-programmed state of manmade meterology. "Later, it was discovered that the Agricultural Sector was paying these people, who were already getting a fat check from the city treasury, exorbitant sums of extortion money under the table to keep rain falling on their crops. Like hell I'll drag the city through that again!“
Response hasn't been temperate, as many others have stormily insisted that Mother Nature should not be tampered with to such great lengths, especially as a form of governmental control outsourced to individuals on behalf of the entire city, and on the taxpayer’s dollar.
“We’ll see how they feel about that a week or two from now.” Ms. Lansky responded from the steps of City Hall, seeming smug. “March may not go out like such a lamb. And you know what they say about April showers...”- Last night, less than a dozen people of Sector 10 were saved from the Darkness by an unknown person or persons. Just as sirens went off, an unusual barrier snapped up around a pair of houses. None of the residents saw the person, but one who came late said the barrier fell and then rose again to allow them entrance.
At morning sirens, the barriers fell, and the person or persons never appeared.
