[ He's speaking a little slowly, the bitterness properly enunciated in the slight tipsy slur to his voice. ]

… You know. I wasn't going to think anything of it, I have way better things to be working on and thinking about, but the more I think about it the more it's really burning me up. I mean, I really wasn't going to think anything of it but then--

[ He clicks his tongue and pauses to take another sip of whatever he's drinking. ]

I think that's really great. Really. My dad never remembered my birthday and he always blamed it on the leap year, but -- but my birthday's the twenty-eighth, that's just bullshit, right? I -- I, um -- it's so stupid, I don't even know if they remember either because I'm pretty sure I'm supposed to be dead--

[ There's a clink as something breaks, and apparently spills as well. ]

Oopsie. What was I saying? Oh -- no, the worst part is I forgot about my birthday too! [ He laughs a little, quiet and forced and slightly whimpery. ] Usually Liz says it to me in the morning, but…

'm not sure what I'm trying to say actually. I'm just giving myself a headache.

Weird is an understatement. Good for her, though. He's not the most reasonable of people most of the time.

[ taking a thoughtful bite of her own ]

Oh, I hope he's not dangerous.

He is. Was, at least. I gave him a job at my factory when he apologized for all the messes he kept trying to pull Liz into.

Oh man. I bet that freaked Liz out. Is he a mutant too?

No, he got into an accident. I don't really know mutants. Well, before coming here.

I didn't really know any before Liz, either. The reception towards mutants back at home wasn't very... uhm, friendly. So most of them went to the Institute.

Some things don't change, I guess.

Ugh, I wish. It's so stupid they way they react to mutants! Like they're freaks of nature or something. You should have seen the way everyone treated Kitty when she transferred to Midtown.

It is stupid. But people are gonna do what they're gonna do... maybe that's why they hate Spider-Man so much. [ Eats some noodles. ]

Yeah, a lot of people used to think he's a mutant... But they don't really care anymore now. People's perspective towards him have completely changed.

Have they really? Not where I'm from. Not that I think it's deserved... [ ... For the reasons other people hate him, anyway. ]

Yeah, everyone likes him now, for the most part. [ a beat ] It's not deserved. Spider-Man tries to help people and people just beat him down whenever they could. It's not right.

[ Harry licks his upper lip, and reluctantly nods, but it's hard -- Spider-Man killed his father, after all. In a way, he did. ]

He's good. New York needs more heroes like him.

[ she just nods and goes silent for a moment, pushing around her food

and then she kind of jerks back ]

Oh, I almost forgot! I got this for you.

[ she grabs the box (it is small cake sized) and holds it out for him ]

I hope you don't mind... I figured you could at least have cake, right?

Oh... hey, thanks. [ He smiles, sincerely. ] You're really the best.

[ just looking a little embarrassed and winding a lock of hair around her finger ]

That's enough for me. [ Noodles. ] Can I ask you a favor?

[ a pause ]

Yeah, sure. What's up?

[ He rubs his mouth. ]

Don't let me -- um. I shouldn't drink. I-I have... I had a drug problem and I don't want to-- [ He shakes his head. ] I can't do it again.

[ there's this long silence and her eyes kind of widen. she tugs at her hair before finally: ]

Of course, Harry. I'll do whatever I can to -- to help you out. Okay? [ taking his hand with her free one and squeezing it ]

[ He flinches his hand away, looking pale. ]

Thanks. I just-- [ Shakes his head. ] I keep thinking about it, more and more. It's so complicated, Mary Jane. You can't understand how complicated it is.

[ she looks a little surprised by this and even a little hurt, but it's brief. ]

No, I don't. I couldn't ever. But I know that it hurts people and it ruins people and I don't want that for you. I don't want anything that horrible to happen to you.
