[ He's not believing any of this. Any of it. Either everyone's cuckoo or he's on some kind of drugs, and Dexter isn't certain which of those sounds more plausible. ]

Someone mind telling me where I can get a plane ticket back to Miami? I'll settle for a freighter at this point. A helicopter? Seaplane? [ Pause. ] A yacht?

I get it. First thing everyone asks is how to get home, but I'm not the kind of guy to kick up my heels and take it all for granted. Crime scenes to get to, work to do, and there's my son--he needs me.

[ There's a long pause as he just circles his room for a moment, restless, pushes both of his hands back through his hair. It's almost impossible to believe, just like he says. ]

Yeah, well maybe it's going to take me a few months to believe it too. I'm hoping it won't come to that. [ Sounding so haggard, stressed to his limit. ] I just want to get home to my son!

I understand. Would that I had better news.

[His empathy is genuine, his voice calm, soothing, strong. He's used to giving bad news, used to offering comfort, and used to having people listen to him.]

[ Give him a few seconds longer. He'll try, he really will. ]

How long am I gonna be stuck here?

I've been here for over a year and a half. Others have been here for over three, but some of those have now gone home. Some are here only a few weeks and return home. There is no way to say, at this point.

The boy who asked about the kayak - he has amnesia, there is much he doesn't remember. He isn't attempting to be difficult.

[ Well, he actually knows how that goes, and since it's of interest to him, and takes the conversation away from how much he misses Harrison, he goes with it. ]

Do you know what caused it?

We don't know for sure no. He doesn't have any mental illness or head trauma. He arrived with it. I know his older brother, he works with my son. So myself and my granddaughter try to look after him.

I'm sorry. Have you tried talking to him about what he doesn't remember? Sometimes that's all it takes, and then sometimes it's better off buried.

How old is he?

About thirteen and change. And yes we have. I believe some of it is better off left alone. Where his brother here, I might feel differently. We didn't know each other well, prior, and he'd likely need him.

[ He nods at that. ]

Yes. He does like to play pranks though.

Did you listen to the greeters when you arrived or duck out before they got to you?

Listened to some of it, broke someone's nose. I wasn't in a very understanding mood. Found the apartments, though.

What do people do for food around here?

I don't suppose you listened to the parts about the Darkness and nighttime?

So get inside at night, don't run the water. Anything else?

Keep empty bottle or jugs to fill before sirens. Let the water run for a few minutes in the morning. Make sure your exterior doors and windows seal air tight. After an earthquake or storm, this is even more important.

The natives are not, over all, friendly towards us so keep alert of your surroundings. There have been attacks and murders in the past.

Watch out for the companies, one practises slavery and the other human experimentation. If they believe they can take you and no one care, they will. And have.

I'm sorry... Slavery and human experimentation? Did I fall into some kind of speculative horror fiction by mistake?
