On the 'good news' side - there is a Newcomer Fund. We fund it ourselves, and each Newcomer can draw from it, if needed, for things such as schooling or testing fees or if they are unable to find a job need food or other necessitatis. Your degree will be honor but you'll need to be re-certified - I had to reseat my boards, for instance.
