[So it does happen on occasion that Sora likes to play Sherlock. This particular evening, inspiration strikes while in the midst of training exercises in the woods (taught to him some time ago by a certain blue haired master). His hair's a little mussed, outfit slightly askew. But here's something new! Sora's sporting some new duds: At the moment, his left arm's covered in what appears to be some well-crafted armor.]

I've been thinking... Back in my world, there used to things called Gates that helped get you from place to place. Thing is, they weren't all that easy to find, and they didn't just open for anybody or for any reason.

Only, if I'm right, I just might know a way to make this work!

[Hence, his next question. It's completely relevant to the previous matter, he promises:]

What's most important to you? What's something you guys just can't go without?

[Tell the sixteen year old about your precious items, Siren's Port. So he can ask to see it. Toss it in the air. Point a weapon at it.]

[It'll turn out just fine.]

[Probably.]

Crossing worlds? By himself? When was that?

[It's one memory he never got.]

[And for once, Sora's the one who finds it a little hard to talk about.]

It was a long time ago, when me and Riku were still fighting.

Back when it was still called Hollow Bastion. There were only heartless there, then.

[An eerie sensation crawls down Roxas' spine as Sora speaks. He had never known that world, can't picture it in his mind based on a name. But there's undeniable.familiarity here, and he doesn't know where it comes from.]

What happened?

We came there searching for the keyhole. Instead we found Riku.

We fought, and for a while, I couldn't use the keyblade.

[It's incredibly vague-- probably because no one's ever really asked him about that time before. He's finding his way through this for the first time.]

[Like Xion--and yet very different.]

So what did you do?

Riku had the keyblade. Donald and Goofy had to go with em. All I had was this toy sword from the islands.

So I kinda gave up.

Until then, I'd always thought the Keyblade was the only thing that gave me strength.

It isn't.

[He's sure of that. Still, that's an awfully bad situation to end up in, and not one Roxas can imagine had an easy solution.]

But you were alone.

That's the thing. I wasn't really...

I had to pick myself up and keep going. [With a little help from Beast of course.] But when it came down to the wire, my friends pulled through for me.

It's in the really bad times that you figure out who your friends are. [He's long forgiven Riku. And he thinks Riku's more than made up for what happened when there was all that darkness in his heart. But that was Donald and Goofy's time to shine. It's why he'll trust them no matter what.] That's when you find out who you are too.

[He understands exactly what Sora means. Even when Axel made choices Roxas had thought he couldn't forgive, when they all made mistakes that had only become obvious in retrospect—in the end, they came back together. They always did.

He knows now that they always will.]

I know what what's like. Having to find out who you are, and they are...and being left behind, too.

[Sora goes quiet, because Roxas isn't just saying that to make Sora feel better. He's saying it because he means it, and that despite their different experiences, they understand each other. At least in this.]

I know you do.

[He can't remember a time when he's ever told anyone else what happened.]

Thanks, Roxas.

[He nods. He could tell Sora that he means it in a more literal sense as well—that he's pretty sure he dreamed of the exact moment Sora lost faith for a while, and so he really does know what it feels like, at least secondhand.

Maybe later. Or maybe he'll let Sora keep that small bit of privacy.]

If the Beast could get through worlds by himself and you could keep going without the Keyblade, maybe you really will find a gate here. Maybe anything's possible.

[You know, Roxas, you're probably the first person who's met this doomed attempt with such optimism. After spending so long here in Siren's Port (it feels long for Sora anyhow, even if nearly everybody's been here longer than him), it feels good to have a goal.]

I hope so!

[Now this next part is said with a more subdued, but no less meaningful tone.] And even if I find a way out of here, I'll still come back and visit you guys.

It'd be nice if you could.

[They both know Roxas isn't going anywhere.]

What other kinds of things opened gates? I don't think ice cream's gonna work for you here.

Hmmm... Other than the stuff I told you before...

There was the Olympus Stone. The Cornerstone of Light. Then there was also a ruby in the Cave of Wonders.

Oh. There was also another from Twilight Town. It was this little blue orb that came off of the Struggle Trophy. And if you held it up to the sun...

[Doesn't sound familiar, nope, okay maybe that one—

Wait. Roxas sits bolt upright.]

...it sparkled, really pretty?

[Oh well, hey now. That's interesting...]

Yeah! Exactly...

[A tilt of the head as he peers back at Roxas curiously. Granted, it doesn't take a big leap of logic to come to that conclusion: that something sparkled in the sun. But Roxas looks alert, attention captured, like he's done something similar himself, even...]

Hold on a minute! [He scrambles to his feet, the NV's camera shaking as he does so.] Just wait here, okay?

[There's a thump as he drops the device on a soft surface, and from the background come the creak of a drawer opening, the faint sounds of fumbling with what's inside. Xact pads over to sniff at the NV, his nose looming large, but is quickly shooed away when Roxas returns to re-focus the camera.]

Was it this?

[Between two fingers he holds a small blue crystal. If held in the sun, it would sparkle prettily.]

[There's a note of amusement when the cat comes over to to the NV, and it even gets a laugh out of him.] Hey Xact.

[Now when Roxas comes back, Xact jumps off the table. Sora gapes at the screen. Roxas has one of them. Sora's got one of those sitting in his pack right this moment. How in the world?]

Yeah! That's the one. Why do you have one of those?

Because you gave it to me.

[He glances down at the orb, rolling it a little between his fingers, then back at Sora.]

The first time you were here, the last time I talked to you, you asked me to hold onto it. [Not so different from Sora hanging onto Roxas' diary.] So I did. Uh, in my sock drawer.

[He's already tried opening up a Gate with the orb that he has, but somehow... he thinks maybe the one that Roxas has in his possession is a little different. There are different memories, different meanings. It's enough to warrant a try.]

You think I could come over and see it in person?

Yeah, of course. Come on over.

[He nods, reaching to turn off the NV. But he falters.]

And Roxas?

Yeah?

Thanks for keeping it safe.

[The Struggle Trophy gem isn't anything special really. It's just a trinket. And technically, he's brought one from his own world. But still... it feels pretty important to him, though he can't say why. He'd be pretty bummed if he lost it.]

[He nods, and then his mouth twitches into a small smile.]

Sure.

It was the least I could do.
