Who's actually dealt with nulls or voids before Or the tech? There are a lot of spooky rumors around but not a lot of facts. And nothing's better than first-hand experience.

[He's waiting at the cafe early, fidgeting with an unlit cigarette he's not allowed to smoke in here.]

[She's early too, but not at the meeting place: she's been in the clothing shop across from the cafe, trying on this and that, watching people come and go in the mirrors as she pretends to coo over her skirts. She sees Jesse arrive, notes the nervousness in his body language, the lack of co-conspirators in the wings. With a few minutes to spare, she buys a blouse that was on sale to placate the ladies at the boutique, returns everything else to the racks, and heads over, scooting in the chair across from Jesse, twisting her hair around one finger, a shy, awkward tell of her own.]

Hi. We - spoke recently, I think? Um.

[She glances down at her lap.]

I'm sorry again for making assumptions.

Oh my god.

[Jesse's confused when it's a little girl who shows up at the table. His brow furrows and he sits up a little straighter. Really, a teenager?]

[He huffs out a humorless laugh, rubbing at his forehead. He'd been about ready to waste whoever showed up, thinking it was some trap.]

I guess we, uh, both made assumptions.

[She laughs a little back, shy but hopeful.]

Kind of a hazard of keeping secrets, I guess.

[It's a tiny bit amused, but not sarcastic; she sounds like she might appreciate the sentiment.]

What if I was a bad guy?

[She shrugs one shoulder.]

I've know some bad guys before. But if you were a bad guy who wanted to hurt me -

- I'd scream my head off and hope mall security could handle you.

[She wrinkles her forehead slightly. She's not totally caught up on modern western slang.]

I understand...well, not what it's like for people to be scared, but. What it's like to have to hide things, just so people don't treat you, um. Differently. In ways you don't want.

I don't even get it, you know? 'cause where I come from, nobody's got powers. So it feels like a ripoff, that this is what I got. Being a Void or whatever.

But it turns out, around here, that's the baddest thing you could be. So I don't tell people.

[she stares down at her hands]

People who are used to having powers...at least ones from a world where most people don't? A lot of them are bullies. They're used to being able to stomp all over people just because they can. And someone they can't just steamroll?

[she shakes her head]

Of course they hate it.
