What about headshots? Do they wear protective helmets or anything?

Depends on the guy. Helmets have their own advantages and disadvantages. It protects the head, but narrows the field of vision usually. They are usually backed up though by others who are well armed, thats the bigger trouble.

They usually avoid it, doesn't mean they can't. After all, a dead body doesn't project a zone, no sense risking your trump card to a lucky shot.
