[Lucifer is lounging at Merlotte's, of all places. With a book, and a glass of--well, whatever he happened to grab. It might be water.]

Well, someone wake the Gregorians, I think it's my birthday.

Let's start the festivities.

[Basically, no one should plan on leaving their home. Maybe ever again.]

[Castiel glares, but he considers this. He doesn't want to meet with Lucifer, especially not now, but this is an easy opportunity to get one of the multiple 'dates' per week out of the way, and not only that, but Lucifer is at a bar.

At least Castiel could drink.

So, in a flutter, Castiel suddenly appears in person and takes a seat, all tension and scowls.]

There. I'm involved.

[Lucifer smirks. He has a glass waiting for Castiel--not because he'd thought his brother would show up, though. It had been for Ruby. Oh, well, he'll get her something else. And he'll let Castiel think he planned this.]

[Castiel considers the glass for a moment but then ignores it, getting up and stalking away briefly to the bar to order something else. He knows better after letting Lucifer slip him the much stronger archangel alcohol he hadn't been expecting a few months earlier.

He returns with his glass, sitting down again, trying to act like this is easy and nothing to be concerned about and that he's in control of the meeting, none of which are really true.]

Why have you decided to celebrate a birthday, regardless of the date itself?

It was to see if anyone would get the reference. And then people took it seriously, or decided to run with it.... I think I'll make it annual.

I'm surprised you don't have one yet.

There was barely a reference at all.

[6-6-12 so doesn't count.]

I have no need of one.

[And who would celebrate it anyway, even if he did?]

[He writes it on a napkin: 6-6-6*2.]

It's close enough. I would have thought little Sentimental Sammy would give you one.

[Points for effort, Lucifer, so Castiel drops that particular subject without argument to focus on the other.]

I'm not certain Dean and Sam celebrate their own birthdays, let alone others.

If Sam starts thinking you want to be a human, he might do it on principle.

Why would he think that?

Because of the way you tag along after them. The fact you kill your own kind.

I'm protecting myself, and my friends. It has nothing to do with wanting to be human.

Having friends is what they think of as a 'human' trait.

They're wrong, but you know how conceited they can be.

[His eyes narrow at that because he can't argue it. Lucifer's right; emotion, friendships, any sort of bonds or love are considered human, not angel, even though angels are more than capable of them. He remembers Dean telling him he'd be like a human once, when he was angry over Castiel's apparent lack of concern and empathy. Coldness is what humans expect from angels; anything else is an oddity and a 'human' trait.

He looks away, taking a sip of his drink.]

I was impressed by your loyalty when we met again in Carthage, Castiel. I meant that. They may take it for granted, they may not trust it because you're an angel...but I saw your heart. I know how strong your ties can be. I suppose I was envious then.

[Castiel's eyes flicker back toward Lucifer, not wanting to acknowledge that he's right in that the others don't trust him, and not wanting to feel anything at the compliment, or Lucifer's proclamation of jealousy. Instead, he lifts his chin slightly, and responds evenly.]

Then you know this is pointless.

[These talks, these meetings; Crowley told him Lucifer would try to sway him, just like Lucifer had tried to do in Carthage. Castiel isn't going to allow it.]

It's not about making you like me, Castiel. I have nothing to gain from it, and you won't bend, anyway.

Then what is it about, Lucifer?

[He's asked before, and Lucifer's answered, but he doesn't believe it.]

How many times are you going to ask that?

[Sipping his drink.]

Do you listen after you ask?

I'm waiting for you to give an answer that makes sense.

Uh-huh. Tell me what I've told you.

[Prove you listened, bro. Then maybe he'll tell you more.]

[Castiel considers not answering just on principle, but eventually he does.]

That there's no need to fight here, so we should have peace.

[Well, at least Castiel's ears work.]

Look...you're the only angel here I didn't 'grow up' with.

When I see Michael, half the time we're both seeing the war. It's not like that with you.

Do you know what I see when I look at you?

[He doesn't bother to ask if Lucifer cares, because he doesn't think for a moment that he does.]

Don't.

[He's not afraid of what Castiel has to say; he's just heard it before. From everyone. So he looks at him evenly, and offers that simple warning.]

I'm in a good mood, Castiel, don't run your mouth and ruin it.

[Castiel takes the warning for what it is and goes silent, eyes narrowed again and taking another sip of his drink. He hates this. If the deal weren't worth it, he would never suffer dealing with Lucifer willingly.

Again, he says nothing, looking away to scowl at a far wall.]
