[ There are no grand and glorious proclamations this day, nor joy nor exultations, though his mood is far from poor. Rather, he is thoughtful, and it reflects in his words and tone. ]

A star falls from heaven.

Can it someday return, restored to its proper place?

Asking this... What are you trying to learn about us?

The question you're asking is almost impossible.

It's so vague. Obviously you don't mean it literally, because stars don't work that way.

[And now comes rambling, for no immediately obvious reason. Mary isn't sure why this question struck her; she went to answer it at first but sat there for fifteen minutes, no clue what to say and no words coming to her. There's a frustration in her voice that she doesn't understand- why should it matter if one stupid philosophical question is too theoretical for her to wrap around? Why should she care?

If Aslan could see her, she'd be worrying her wedding ring, looking restless.]

But it depends on so many things. 'Heaven' could mean anything, falling could mean anything. It depends on the star, it depends on where it fell from. What about where it fell to? What happens to "heaven" while it's gone? By the time "someday" comes, maybe its proper place isn't there anymore- it'd be too late. You don't even know if it ever really had a "proper" place in the first place. Things just happen- where a star winds up is random. Not everyone has a place where they're supposed to be in the world. How can you know?

[The idea of destiny makes her sick. Any destiny- the kind that shapes nations, determines futures, strips away free will or pulls together true love.]

So you want to know what we think of a situation in our lives.

[He's fishing for self-confidence, for optimism, taking readings of the hopefulness of the people who answer. She supposes it's as good a goal as any.]

Then I don't know. I still say it's impossible. You can't return if there's no heaven to return to.
