video;

To the new arrivals to the city, my name is Re-l Mayer and I'm a corporal for the Siren's Port Police Department. I'm also a Newcomer case worker and I'm always willing to help people should they need housing, jobs, or other information in the city. For instance, the SPPD is always hiring for several of its departments, provided you have the skill set and stomach for the job. You can speak with me if you're interested or you can go to the department building in Sector 4 and speak with Chief Miller.

[She doubts anyone's going to apply for the job considering how officers are treated in the city, but at least she can say she tried to recruit people.]

Raul Creed of the Newcomer Political Party recently brought up the Citizenship Tests that are going to be coming up soon. It's a test that is open for Newcomers to apply for citizen rights in the city, which will give them added protection and security. There are manuals that will be distributed this Friday at the Newcomer Community Center for those who are interested in studying for the test. I'll be holding a six hour class that day for people to familiarize themselves with the material before the test. The class will run from 10am-4pm with a half an hour break for lunch.

With that, the Newcomer Community Center will be holding classes for other various subjects starting next Monday. Most of these are very basic classes for cooking, writing and reading, language arts, and other various skill sets. An official list of classes and their instructors will be posted prior to the class on Friday for those who wish to look over what will be offered.

If you have any questions about the classes, feel free to call me, see me in my office, or speak to me over the network.

[She starts to say something else but ends up pausing to cough once and clear her throat.]

...Finally, I just wanted to ask the network's opinion on something. I'm well aware that we have a Greeter Protection Program and we have the Newcomer Community Center, both of which are 'programs' used to provide safe environments for Newcomers and other workers.

Do you think the Newcomer population should have something more in terms of protection from the natives, the companies, and even from ourselves? Or do you believe that what's in place - governmental procedures and the SPPD - are enough? [She pauses.] I'm not advocating for people to come up with new options. I'm simply asking for opinions based on what you've seen and the situation you had back in your home worlds. That's all.

[ooc: There'll be some sort of formal list of classes and instructors on the OOC comm later in the week. People who are still interested in offering subjects and instructors, feel free to let me know here or in a PM!]

Vigilantism is hardly an appropriate idea to suggest, Corporal Mayer. Foolish, altogether. Extralegal activity should be punished, though I scarcely see how a police officer such as yourself would condone the idea that the law as well as the enforcers are ineffective.

[A viewpoint which might echo that of Franziska's, though in reality it was he who had first stipulated the view as a Prosecutor and her father.]

Masked morons parading about in spandex are not fit to offer protection to this City.

[He's caught sight of a few of those idiots, you know.]

You may as well have!

Have you any idea what sort of extremists think to take advantage of a sanction such as that? You needn't say it in so many words for them to think that is what you mean. The Tower Apartments being targeted and blown to bits should have given you more insight than that.

This has nothing to do with feeling safe at all. Cold, hard, objective facts, Corporal. The fact of the matter is safety here is nothing more than an illusion.

Peh. I do not believe it is really so simple. Under the Rule of Law we all become a nation of laws and not of men. Laws are meant to exist independent of, and separate from, human will. Thus, the average citizen expects us to make the decisions on their behalf without personal feeling at all. But, do we stand here and shout from our soapboxes so ineffectually as to pretend we have control over factors that stand outside of our reach?

You want opinions, Corporal? Here's one: I think what truly matters is not how you think the limitations placed upon the enforcers makes the system flawed. It was created by men, so shortcomings are to be expected.

What is more, do you think the government here will allow for changes to help us? Think again.
