Fifteenth Wish (Video)

[Gohan is sitting at a table, and though it's all neatly organized, there are stacks of books and papers all over it. Independent projects, you know. That fun university stuff. His expression is thoughtful and curious, kind of giving the impression that he's been considering this for a while.]

I've been thinking lately about what I want to do when I get older. I'm coming to the end of my first year of university here, and it really seems like I should have some kind of focus in mind for next year.

I'm just not sure what yet, though. I've thought about a few things, but . . . How do you decide? [Grown-up decisions. How do they work?]

what classes did you take?

[Huh. Person only comfortable with text? Well, that's okay. Gohan shall oblige.]

I've kept it varied. Hard sciences, social sciences, math, some lit. Wanted to keep my options open since I wasn't sure what to focus on.

[He's just a grump that doesn't like talking face-to-face.]

do you actually like any of those?

[Gohan is used to grumpy people. He thinks they're kinda funny, actually.]

I like all of them.

[Not that it'd actually hurt a Saiyan, but Gokudera has dynamite to back up his grumpiness with. :|]

and do you manage to do well?

[Psh. The grumpy people he knows can blow up planets with their index fingers. So not worried.]

My grade average is almost perfect.

[You see why this is hard for him, Gokudera?]

then just do whatever the hell you want, it's not that hard. how old are you anyways?

[...Nope. Because he's got a near-perfect GPA and is already doing what he plans to do for the rest of his life.]

[And the grump just rolls right off him.]

I'm just not sure what I want, is all. I was just curious about how people come to their decisions about it. But thanks anyway.

[His mommy was in control of this early in his life. And then there were other things he had to worry about besides school. And he likes too many things.]

why are you even worried about it then? if you're so good at shit you don't need to choose a focus. just stick with everything until you figure out what's best, dumbass. other people choose for stupid reasons, like what makes the best paycheck.

[If only he knew Gohan was half alien. Then he might be nicer. Maybe.]

Well, what things are you thinking about?

A few different things, really. Like engineering, or teaching, or medicine . . . Something I can use to help people.

Well, I bet you would be good at any of those! I guess it comes down to which you would rather do.

Thanks. And that's the thing: I'm not really sure which one I want the most.

Well, you've got a while to figure it out, right?

Well, this is the kind of stuff you train for in universities, and picking an area to focus on is pretty important, so you can take the right classes for it.

Oh, right! Well, what are you the best at, then?

My best grades are in math, but none of them are low or anything. [His mom drilled a very strong work ethic into him, after all.]

Then maybe something to do with math?

What do you like to do?

Help people in any way I can, really. Which is what makes deciding this so hard; there's so many ways to do that.

In that case, don't become a greeter. [Frown. It's really horrible, dude, you have no idea.] You'll be better off as a lawyer or something.

The decision of which path to take toward the future is yours to make. [not really helpful]

[No, not really. But he doesn't mind.] Oh, I know nobody can decide for me. I'm just curious about how people other people narrowed down what they wanted to do, and try and see if that process helps me.

Would you base your own decision on how your peers determined to answer this question for themselves?

I'd take the answers into account, at least. I have a few ideas; I'm just not sure how to narrow it down and figure out what it is that I really want.

Consider pursuing what you find most pleasing.

I'm thinking about engineering, medicine, or teaching, but I'm not sure which one I like the most.

Which university do you attend?

SPU. I know the others are more specialized, but I wasn't really comfortable with the whole thing about them being affiliated.

[That would be the reason he has not seen the other boy at the schools.]

I attend Hawthorne University and the University of Hillsdale.

[He blinks at that, actually rather impressed. Forget affiliation, this is cool.] Wow, you go to both? I haven't seen any other kids close to my age at the universities; I was starting to think I was the only one.

[You are his age and going to university. This is therefore awesome.]

Yes, it is as I stated, [he responds with stoic patience. As is usual for him, Spock remains blank-faced, even as Gohan turns excited.] While they may contain affiliation biases, the universities offer adequate education courses for Earth facilities. [He's not old enough for a full-time job (that doesn't stop him from freelance programming, etc) and he uses the classes to fill up his days.] It is expected that the greater percentage of attendees to these higher grades on Earth would be of an age between seventeen and twenty-five. The level of your intellect must be above Terran average if you are indeed "close to my age."

[Stoic, linefacey people are some of his best friends ever. He doesn't bat an eye at the flat tone. Completely normal, as far as he's concerned.]

I was homeschooled back in my world; it wasn't until I got here that I found out I seemed to be ahead of the other kids my age. And . . . you look about eleven or twelve?

[Latching onto something else now.] So you're not from Earth, then. [He's getting the sense that there's more in common here than being advanced students. Even though he was born on Earth.]

[Because he has a project in mind and Gohan is smart and Bya has no trouble tapping all sorts of resources.]

You might do well in civic engineering and political science.

[He, however, is doing calligraphy, and slightly avoiding the young fukutaichou who recently arrived.]

[It's a good thing he knows you're secretly nice.]

Never thought about political science before. But civic engineering is pretty much one of the things I've been considering.

[LIES AND SLANDER. He is Kuchiki Byakuya grade A asshole.]

Political science offers you an insight into not only how laws work, but the requirements for them to be implemented and analysis of the people behind them. In a society such as this, delving deeper into international relations in regards to Newcomer versus Native would benefit not only the Newcomers, but the Natives as well.

[And Byakuya. But that's beside the point.]

[Nuh-uh, he's nice to little children!]

[Rests his chin in his hands as he considers.] Hm. That does sound pretty important.

[Curious headtilt as he watches the calligraphy.] What's that you're doing?

[LIES. He merely tolerates them.]

It is very important.

[A glance up.]

Calligraphy.

Hm... well, what do you like to do? You always want to do something that makes you happy!

I mostly just like helping people. It's just that there's so many ways to do that, that it's hard to pick.

[He gets that out, then pauses. Tilts his head. Blinks. He's sure he's never talked to this lady before, but she seems really, really familiar for some reason.] Um . . . have we ever met before? [Geez, a kid his age shouldn't be so familiar with death, man.]

We've met a few times, but don't worry. No one ever remembers the first time. [Smiles.] So, helping people? That might be fun! What about working at the community center?
