Oh, but I've never had a twenty-fifth birthday before! It's hard to have one when you die a year before; it wasn't a very nice thing. I think I died of infection, I wouldn't recommend it. [spoilers, he never died.] I wouldn't recommend my century either, it was miserable.

Is there anything a person should have done or seen by the age of twenty-five? I'd like to catch up!

[he starts moving again, hands behind his back, walking around Rufus in a bid to reach for his hair.]

Why do you seek knowledge, then?

[ Eyes following his course, Rufus stays still for now. So help him, Jack - pull on his hair, and he'll give you a better wallop than the last. ]

Application, power, curiosity... 'Tis obvious, I think.

[he won't tug right away; he'll just...run his hand through what hair he can reach, fascinated by how red Rufus' hair is. It's like blood between his fingers.]

Aren't you lonely? [he asks, quietly.] You can't hold conversations with a book.

[ Though he's rather unsure how he feels about having a man admiring his hair so, he doesn't exactly protest.

He tilts his weight backward to shoot Jack a skeptical, upside-down look. ]

I seek company when I do desire it. [ Kinda. Sometimes. ] Why shouldst thou concern thyself with matters of mine own?

[hey man hair bros! admiring physical traits isn't limited to gender; Jack's seduced men and women alike. He'll just.....tug......his hair like a child. It's not a yank, it's just mostly to see Rufus' reaction.]

Not many people can stand that old way of speaking, it's pretentious. [really bluntly c: the smile takes away some of the sting...or does it?]

You are concerned with my affairs. Do I not have the right to be concerned with yours?

[ Oh, he knew it. The tug earns a warning smack of the open fan - the flat of the panels against Jack's wrist. ]

... [ Rufus' brows furrow. That was... abrupt and unexpected. ] I care not what is thought of mine speech, let alone any other thing about mine person. If thou shouldst care to take notice, others art aggravated by me regularly.

[ Languidly, he shrugs and rolls over to face Jack, the hair he holds draped over his shoulder. Surprisingly, he's not angry - in fact, he can respect a certain level of honesty. He simply searches the other's features with speculative eyes. ]

Fair point, if not for the fact that I have reason to inquire, whereas personal affairs of mine are all but useless information to thee; thou couldst not possibly expect to exploit weakness from details foolishly divulged?

[ow! damn it. jack is still looking at him reproachfully and rubbing his poor wrist when he answers.]

Rufus, Rufus. Honestly. If I were to manipulate you, you'd think I'd find other ways that talking to you directly, given that you had broken a cipher that I myself had overlooked.

[he's too observant. jack usually has nobles like these killed if they weren't useful, but alas.] I told you. You're interesting. And irritating. [he sticks out his lower lip.] And technically, we're the closest in age.

[ Iiiinteresting. Tucking a wrist beneath his chin for which it can rest upon, he senselessly flaps his fan in Jack's general direction. ]

Surely, thou wouldst not be proposing friendship.

[he scratches the back of his head, before leaning in riiight into Rufus' personal space, again.] So I think. Are you?

[ Rufus refuses to fluster this time, Jack - instead, he'll brace himself with a challenging cross of the arms. ]

After threatening thee, and clearly expressing views and intent far different from thine own, thou wishest to befriend me.

[ There's just clear disbelief knit into his features. ]

Come onnn.

[Jack whines, blowing hair out of his face. He isn't quite used to not having his way, so he'll be pestering Rufus forever about this. Arthur was far, far easier to convince!]

Or can I just come up here sometimes? Lying is tiring work.

[ wh-- what is that even! Flinching back for the unexpected hair in his face, he pushes Jack's away in reflex. ]

Nay. Thou wouldst be but a distraction, with all thy pacing, pestering, tantrums--

[ He's a bit worked up, listing off all those aggravations! His hair and clothes rise as though to puff up - but cutting himself short with a huff, he drifts back to take a seat on the back of his chair. Fans himself for a moment with a sigh. ]

'Tis unlikely I could stop thee.

[FLAWLESS VICTORY!! Jack beams, taking a seat back in his own chair and laughing. Yep, he hasn't lost his touch.]

You could keep on hitting me with that damned fan of yours, is that made of steel or something? It smarts.

[ Meanwhile, Rufus frumps at his celebratory behavior, leering from behind that very fan. ]

Surely... [ 'Surely', he fully intends to hit him when needed, that is. But glancing down to it, he hums and tilts the blades for a better view, to confirm it. ] 'Tis designed for combat.

[jack's brow arches so hard that it's in danger of disappearing into his bangs.]

A...fan. [That's a really girly choice of weapon.] Really. Have you tried it?

[ Excuse you, you meant to say that it's fabulous. Jack's belittling tone earns a slight tick of annoyance. ]

Wouldst thou care to confirm?

[ With a flick of the wrist, he holds the blades at the ready, just daaaring him to test his patience further. ]

Well, since I can't use B. Rabbit properly--

[--so jack casually picks up the paring knife and throws it at Rufus' head, actually curious about the state of the dukes, of the current era.

[ Without batting an eye, it seems, Rufus angles the flats to redirect the course of the blade - and with a flick, cause it to bounce so that he might catch the knife by its handle as it twirls overhead.

Furthermore, he fails to miss a beat, dashing from the chair and across the table, planting a heeled foot into the cushioned seating between Jack's legs to hold the fan at his throat, as he halfway stands on the wooden surface, overhead. ]

Consider thyself fortunate; seldom do I spare warning. [ Narrowing his eyes. If Jack shouldn't act in time, he'll take a slash at his ascot, to leave it hanging open. ]

[one moment he threw the knife, the next he has blades at his throat and he's breathing harshly through his nose.

How...?]

[his ascot's hanging askew by the time he calms down enough to talk. whoa. note to self: paring knives do not work on Rufus Barma. He lifts his hands slowly in surrender.]

All right, all right? Show-off. [he breathes out.] You could kill someone with that.

I will not take part in thy games, Vessalius.

[ Feeling as though his point was well made, he moves to turn away, tossing the knife onto the table at his feet before he steps down to reproach his chair. ]

I'm not asking you to, Rufus.

[though he's going to have to put up with them, but w/e. jack draws his knees up to his chest and winks at the other man.]

But friendship sounds nice.

[ Yeah, that's exactly what he's talkin' about... He's old and grumpy, okay. ]

Just as thou hadst befriended Arthur? [ He brushes his hair over his shoulder, very sassy-like. ]

Ah...but did you really think Arthur was my friend?

[Jack tilts his head to the side, eyeing Rufus curiously.]

[ A flat look, in return. ]

'Twas precisely mine point.
