M'sieur Marius...... Have you seen him? Bonnis mezig!
[Eponine is trying her best to bite back how worried she sounds, and in her anxiety, the new vocabulary she's learned in Port has escaped her completely.]
I cannot find him on this thing. This -
Bonnis mezig! And M'sieur Enjolras - Whoever has him - please let him answer me. He needs to know if it is... If M'sieur Marius has gone.
(Bonnis mezig is Argot for 'tell me')

I had one, once.
[ A beat. ]
Do you want to go back?
Re: [audio]
[She pauses to think. Marius is back in Paris now, and he was the only light in her life for a long time. But here, she has friends... there are bad things too, of course, and she's in a lot of trouble here...]
To Paris? It is hard, M'sieur. There are lots of things I want that I'll never have and sometimes it is easier not to dwell on it. My family is in France - my little sister and my brother - and I feel bad that I have a nice time here, whilst I know in France, that they do not. I have friends here. But there is trouble in both places...
Do you wish to return?
[audio]
[ Not that he really has one, but that's neither here nor there. ]
I might visit again someday.

[ He doesn't question her statement, but he does doubt the veracity of her claim. ]
Re: [audio]
In Paris, I did things you would perhaps say is bad. I stood watch whilst my Papa robbed, and I picked pockets and I took messages asking for money. I tricked and I begged. And the rich knew to avoid me and my family. Even the other people like us; my Papa belongs to a famous gang in Paris, and I did what they told me.
[She sounds decidedly bitter]
we belong to the night, really. I like night better than day.

There are worse things.
[ He's not really in a place to judge. ]
Re: [audio]
[Her tone is light, joking. She doesn't mind what she is - or she does, but she won't admit that.]
No, I know there are worse things to be. My... well all of them, they are mangerers - that is, murderers. I have not done that, and I hope they don't ask me. They will murder me before I kill someone else.

[ And naive if she's been as "bad" as she says she has. Noticeably, perhaps, he does not answer her question. ]
Not everyone can hold their ground.
Re: [audio]
I do not tell you this for pity, M'sieur, or to beg a coin, so do not think it. Sometimes, it is just good to talk, yes?
[audio]
[ He's not the most sympathetic person, besides. ]
Did it help?
Re: [audio]
[She laughs, strangely humerous given the conversation.]
No. I would rather they slit my throat than let me starve, but they will not. But there is nothing to be done on it, so kik-kik! There is no use in tears.
(kik-kik= what the hell))
