Statistically speaking, how long does it usually take before you can pretty much accept that they aren't coming back?

So it would seem. One could argue such a thing is a blessing in disguise - at least you need not worry that they might come to harm here.

Perhaps not physically. And even that is no guarantee. The Core works in ways beyond our understanding.
