001 - In which Howl is Pulled from Elsewhere
[A man’s voice, louder than it should be.]
Sophie! SOPHIE.
[A man flickers into view on camera. He’s decidedly handsome, well-groomed and dressed, a blue jewel hanging from one ear. One might almost be able to smell a whiff of hyacinth perfume. For a moment he turns the NV over and around in his hands until the viewer just gets a jumble of him – flashes of hair and hands and eyes that are strangely pale, green, reflective like glass. Finally the window comes to rest on him again, and he is glaring.]
Never hire a cleaning lady. If they come nosing their way into your life, boot them out the door, as you value your sanity.
[Hard to say if he knows he’s talking to you. In all honesty, it probably doesn’t matter. He pushes the hair back from his face, handsomely perturbed.]
All right, since there seems to be no immediate way back: I’ll need the nearest junkyard. Preferably magical. Non-magical will do in a pinch, though I’ll have to recreate my notes.
Also: A book of poetry. Promptly.

There are no connecting portals. One makes the hole, and it appears in an appropriate location Elsewhere.
Otherwise you'd always be asking who made the first portal to connect to the second.
[ Video ]
[ A beat. ]
People will tell you it won't work, you know. On account of the Core.
[ Video ]
[A sideways glance.]
Already done.
[With the implicit question: Not going to do the same, Break?]
[ Video ]
[ There's a doll on Break's shoulder that seems to spring to life, all of a sudden: ]
WE'RE TRAPPED, WE CAN'T GET HOME, WE'RE STUCK HERE FOREVER!
[ Video ]
Unless your shoulder does the talking for you?
[ Video ]
[ There's the crinkle crinkle of cellophane, as he twirls open the wrapper of a hard candy. ]
Even so - you never know for sure until you tryyyyyyyyy~!
[ Video ]
[Possibly both.]
Portals are a bit of a specialty.
[He smiles.] So quite right.
[ Video ]
[ CRUNCH! He speaks, with his mouth full of candy, chomping away. ]
Still, nothing ventured, nothing gained, right?
[ Video ]
[ Video ]
[ In the most casual of tones, as if he were commenting on the weather: ]
Besides - I'd rather seek a thing, then wait for it to come, inevitably.
[ Video ]
I find it's not best to be too eager, or you get your wish.
[Also, it's not Break's neck on the line in this case.]
[ Video ]
Ah. Well, perhaps you're right about that.
[ He nods, as if he's agreeing with a piece of sage advice. ]
These portals of yours. Are they for long-distance travel only, or can you manage short hops?
[ Video ]
Sometimes the distances between worlds are shorter than we think.
I don't make jumps into other people's houses, if that's what you're wondering.
[ Video ]
No, no. Not at all. It simply occurred to me that you could test your portals within the confines of the city, without risking the effects of the Pull.
[ And having a method of travelling quickly, from point to point, within the city would be useful in its own right. ]
By the way - my host keeps a large library. He's an Englishman, like yourself. I don't know for sure, but it's quite possible he has the book you're looking for.
[ Video ]
[This man is a curiosity. Perhaps a challenge.]
And I suppose you'd be willing to test them?
[ Video ]
[ Not on the Network. Even set to private, it's not secure. ]
[ Video ]
[ Video/Private ]
Let me know when you'd like to come look for your book. I imagine you'll want to settle in first.
[ And then both he and Emily wave and simultaneously say: ]
BYE-BYE
[ END TRANSMISSION ]
