[A very slick, businesslike man is on the other end of the NV, and appears to be holed up in a location much more secure than the Newcomer apartments (it's a parking garage, shhh.) The dark sunglasses he wears hide his eyes and any clue as to what the expression on his face really means, though if you use your imagination, it might be... annoyance.]

We needn't really bother with introductions.

[And a brief, faux-pleasant smile is interrupted by a sharp, serious tone of voice.]

All I require is information. Provide me with the date, including the year, my approximate location and coordinates, and the manner by which I came to arrive here.

[And then all of a sudden he smiles again. It is not a good smile at all, looking strained and like he is trying to sound pleasant.]

I apologize for sounding terse. I've had a very long day.

Will anyone be good enough to tell me what I need to know?

Supposedly, it's somehow locked away from the rest of the world thanks to the Core and it tends to bring in people who have some sort of special power or abnormality.

Well, everyone isn't a normal human. Either they're a human with an abnormality or they aren't human at all. I heard that about ten percent of the people here don't have any powers.

[Which makes her wonder just how those people wound up here.]

Probably, but the Core is pretty well guarded. I'm sure the best explanations would come from whoever's controlling it.

I was. I will not be using them. I plan to pursue a career as soon as possible.

Well, good luck with that. There are some people who are really prejudiced against Newcomers in Siren's Port...which is kind of stupid, when you consider the reason everyone wound up here in the first place.

As I understand it, there are several companies offering lucrative positions to Newcomers.

That would be SERO and AGI. There's a few Newcomer owned businesses, too, but SERO and AGI have been around the longest and probably have the best jobs to offer if you've got the skills.

Biology, biochemistry and virology.

Then you should probably apply to work with SERO, or maybe one of the hospitals will have an opening.

Do you enjoy the work? I always got good grades in advanced chemistry class, but I'm not sure what kind of career I want.

I suppose it depends. I've always found great meaning in my work, though others don't have much of a stomach for it.

I guess you would encounter some pretty gross things now and then in virology.

[That is a rather creepy laugh, but Layla mostly shrugs it off. It's much less creepy than her French teacher with the possessed arm.]
