[ Tavi looks absolutely baffled today. For once, he's got a simple agenda on his mind. ]

Can anyone explain what a groundhog has to do with predicting spring? I don't think I follow that train of thought.

...And speaking of, do things like that whole day-repeating happen often? I'm glad it's over, but if it's likely to happen again I'd at least like to be more unsurprised.

I still don't understand how this place is supposed to make any sense.

I've been here FOREVER, and that day repeating thing hadn't happened before. But plenty of other weird stuff has.

Oh. Hmm. Well, I think I can live with the other weird stuff. I was just getting headaches.

[ He pauses, and decides to lose his poker-face briefly. What the bloody crows, it's a talking... bizarrely colored... pony. ]

...Forgive me, I-- don't think I've ever met anyone quite like you before.

[By now, she's used to that statement.]

[ He can hear that slightly different pronunciation of 'human,' and furies, this is such a strange experience.

And the name is even more baffling. ]

Nice to meet you. I'm Tavi. Is everyone in your homeworld... equine?

Nope. There are dragons too. And other stuff. Just not hewmans!

Dragons? [ Tavi is impressed. That just sounds... fun. ] What kinds of other stuff?

Griffins, cows, rabbits, birds, donkeys -- I can't name all of them.

[ Standard farm and wildlife animals, then... ] What are griffins?

[She grimaces a little. Apparently griffins are a bit of a sore subject.]

They're like... eagles mixed with lions.

I've never seen a horse with wings before. I didn't know they'd-- work.

[ Tavi has enough sense not to say 'support a small horse's weight in the air,' not to a girl. ]

I've only been flying my whole life. I've been all over this island, too!

[ He hasn't heard the word pony yet, or he'd've picked up on that by now. ]

It must be amazing to see. What's it like?

It's a superstition, apparently. It doesn't make a whole lot of sense, but I suppose there's some merit to it. Or years and years of coincidence. We don't have that particular superstition back home.

And... no, the day repeating thing... that was new.

I think I'll assume the years and years of coincidence. Nothing else really makes sense.

Okay. If it was new, and not a pattern... well, maybe we'll get lucky and it'll just be an anomaly.

[ She laughs. ]

I'm afraid I'll have to agree with that assessment. I've been here a year and some things still throw me a bit.

We'll know for sure next year, assuming either of us are here that long. [ A pause. ]

Sorry, I don't think we've spoken before. Ella of Frell - Nice to meet you.

A whole year? [ Tavi blinks at her for a moment. ] I've heard some people go home for a bit and come back--and still remember, I mean. Have you been here a year straight?

[ Still, he smiles at her. ] No, we haven't. I've been kind of quiet. I'm Tavi.

What's Frell like? Is it like the Port at all?

Yeah, I have. A couple of my friends have left and come back though. Others...haven't.

[ She smiles back. ] There's no harm in quiet. Nice to meet you, Tavi.

Frell is... nothing like the Port. It's much more technologically advanced and crowded here. Frell is more spacious, and peaceful - the most dangerous thing we really have to watch out for is the occasional ogre attack.

Peaceful would definitely be a welcome change.

[ From home. ]

It's more technologically advanced here... What kinds of stuff do you have?

Back home? Well, we have indoor plumbing for one - not as advanced as the ones here, mind you. And we have open air galleries like the mall here, only instead of those escalators that are purely technological, ours are man powered.

Our era is more swords and magic than guns and technology.

It doesn't make sense most of the time. You just go with it.

[He pauses a minute, head tipped slightly to the side as he considers the first question. That consideration doesn't last long though.]

[ Tavi frowns. He disapproves strongly of Things Not Making Sense. It's a little ironic, actually. ]

Maybe there's something in the library about it. I could try checking it, at any rate.

[Go ahead and waste your time in the library. Frau will stay away from that place for any real reason, thanks. He only goes when he needs to exchange the porn he's hidden there.]

[ Tavi will never understand how spending time in a library as a rule can be a waste. Maybe time researching one particular topic can turn out to be unproductive, but libraries are always worth it. ]

[ Tavi curses a little internally. He's been trying to emulate the idioms of most other residents; this time, though, he seems to have slipped. ]

I don't know. I just sort came up with it. If it really works, it seems like magic that they could know instinctively, or always predict accurately. And it's about the weather.

[ Tavi enjoys indulging in logic. His logic, anyway. ]

[It's not that he's slipped, it's just that Frau is a lot different from other residents here.]

[ But anyone has access to this information. In Tavi's mind, he slipped. ]

I was thinking in terms of 'weather-witching powers' as a phrase and just abbreviated. In this city it might even be reasonable. But I guess I used the wrong term.

[ Yes, he is the kind of boy who will sometimes correct his own spoken grammar.

It probably would be. I've just never heard "witching" before.

I've been here a year and although the whole time thing hadn't happened before, you kinda get used to the strange things. Well, used to the fact that they happen, not the the things themselves.

Strange is one thing. One day repeating over and over, and some people knowing and some not? That's different. And it makes you wonder what it is about Newcomers that made us immune.

To answer your first question, it's some kind of folklore, if I'm not mistaken. [ Alternatively, superstition wasn't a bad way to describe it, as Miss Ella had described it. ]

As for your second -- this is the first time it's happened, but I'm afraid it's also one of the mildest...events, to have taken place here.

It Does Not Seem Very Intuitive So It Must Have Some Kind Of Coincidental Mythological Explanation Behind It Dependent On Specific Folklore
