Yes, something about the sixteen years ago part really makes that seem probable. Also your opening statement. How different 1996 is to 2012 when it's probably not the same universe makes it a moot point, but hopefully those who've lived through those years on said planet can give you a broad idea of the possibilities if nothing else.
