[ Wait. Marco deleted that part, thinking. He's not sure why, but for some reason, he thinks that asking the year of his timeline would not be . . . best.

And when it comes to his gut, that gut it usually always right. He tries again, sending out a more polished text message. ]

[ Marco got all the info from the pamphlets, including the AGI one that is denying the existence of the "Core", whatever that is. ]

Politics: two major companies, one city, a government that attempts to hold an equilibrium that's more like preventing a slide into total monopoly by AGI or SERO. One known for their more physical and entertainment indulgences and slave-trade dealings, the other for scientific advancement, human experimentation, the fine print in the brochures. The companies are what hold the most influence over the way this city runs, if they don't outright "run" things. Or maybe they do by now. I'm a little more rusty on what's going on around that.

Demographic breakdown? A few hundred people pulled in by the Core, some device, energy something down under the diamond you woke up in. Which the companies want, to destroy or study, your pick per which company you look at. Places of origin span from Earth, Earth, and more Earth, to different worlds with vastly different species and natural talents that have little to do with what powers people manifest after showing up here.

[ Okay. So far, Marco is the only one here from Yeerks-Invading-Earth as far as he is concerned. Which makes Marco incredibly jealous of all the other Marcos who don't have to put up with the bull he had to deal with for the past few years. ]

why is AGI saying the core doesn't exist in their pamphlets

I think it suits AGI to have us ignore reality in favor of what they want. Earth laws aren't friendly to much of what goes on here, I suspect. And you're only a big fish in a little pond as long as the pond stays small.

except they aren't. There is SERO. And the local gov't. So there's two big fish that wants the smaller fish's lunch money. but SERO isn't denying it and local gov't isn't. so denying it can only work with the AGI loyalists

but not to someone who just arrived and have no context of this place

Remember, AGI controls the media -- and people are willing to start believing whatever's easiest. How many have seen the Core for themselves? Touched it? Gotten close enough to recognize it from any other similar object? Is the Core responsible, or something else? Is it a front, or just the tip of the iceberg?

Newcomers are still the minority of the island's population. The general population has no love lost on us, or much for us, for good reason. We come back. They don't. Pick a set of theories you want to support more over the rest. They've had that going on for years. Saying the Core's a hoax? A joke? An urban legend?

How honestly hard do you think it is to sell that claim to people willing to believe it?

[ While Marco was not aware of AGI of controlling the media, much of what has been said makes sense. Marco is still finding it difficult to consider this his real problem however. ]

if no one cares about newcomers, then why waste resources on recruitment

Because people lie about what they want all the time. Why not now, for this?

We get a resurrection card. It's not guaranteed, but it's rare any of us stay dead and gone forever when we go. Natives? No such luck. Dead once, dead forever.
