[A rustling sound, like someone shifting around on a bed.]

You know, I make sure to pay really good attention to the calendar and changing the days, and I realized that it's been a whole year and a half since I first got here. It's sort of weird - sometimes it doesn't feel that long at all, but there are times it seems a lot longer. Even though it's hard, I'm glad. I learned a lot of stuff I probably wouldn't have, from some really amazing people. Some of them have gone home, but...

[She pauses, making sure her voice will hold before continuing.]

I know most of them are back where they would want to be. Even if I miss them, being sad just shows that we were close, so I think even that is something to be glad for. I hope everyone wouldn't be too sad for very long if I got sent home again, too.

I guess I just wanted to say thank you to everyone, all my friends and even people I've only talked to once. I don't know if I could have been very happy here at all if I didn't meet all of you, so I feel like owe you a lot.

[ She still regrets not telling him to come back. ]

Did you ever make up?

Yeah, we did. I'm glad we did - not just because he meant a lot to me, but -- I never thought he'd just be gone, like that. I guess I kind of took him being here for granted.

Yeah, I know what you mean. But it's really good that you got on good terms with him beforehand.

Yeah, me too. I still feel terrible that we even had the argument, but ... I'm not really sorry about what I said. It was just a mess. I would have felt worse if something had happened to him and we weren't on speaking terms.

Mhm. There's less to regret that way, right?

Yeah. I know if I ended up leaving tomorrow or something, I wouldn't want to have any regrets - or to have anyone with regrets.

Yeah.

[She pauses.]

Actually, Ella, can I tell you something?

Of course. What's on your mind?

It might be sort of, um... Surprising, so you have to promise you'll be okay!

I promise, I'll be fine. What is it?

[She puts up a filter as best she can, and then pauses for a few seconds. Luckily, it gets a little less harrowing each time, so it's a little under a minute before she blurts out:]

I'm not human.

[ She has two friends who are shinigami, one who's an elf, another who's a cat - Ahiru confessing isn't that big of a shock, fortunately. ]

Really?

Mhm.

[Another pause, though it's shorter this time.]

I'm a bird.

... You're a bird? How did you become human? Magic?

Yeah.

[She reaches down to the chain of her necklace, holding it up so Ella can see.]

You know how I always wear this?

Yes. I figured it was a memento of home or something. [ ... like the one she used to wear. ]

Well, it sort of is! I just can't take it off, either, or else I change back.

No wonder you never take it off. But what kind of a bird are you?

Yeah, it might be sort of inconvenient. I'm a duck.

[ Dawww, that's so cute. ]

It must have been a real adjustment for you if you're a duck. [ Okay to be honest, it IS a LITTLE weird. But if she could accept a talking cat, she can accept a duck that is human with the aid of amulet. It's not like she's a stranger to magic. ]

Does anyone else know?

Actually, I didn't really find out until later. It's sort of a long story.

Mhm, a few people. But it's mostly a secret, so promise you won't tell anybody, okay?
