how can x equal so many different things isn't it only one letter shouldn't it only be able to be one number too

It's one number per problem. It kind of serves as a placeholder while you solve the answer.

Because the 'x' doesn't exactly exist in the problem. If you have an example, I could probably explain it better.

Yeah, but think of 'x' more like a ghost. There are different ghosts in the world, but each ghost is a different person, right?

And that problem's easy, since you just subtract seven from nine to get two.

That's because it's a different question. If you say "X" is a person - then in a different question "X" is being possessed by a different ghost which is the number or the answer. Sorry, I'm not really good at this. Haruhi kind of tutored me back at home.
