how can x equal so many different things

isn't it only one letter

shouldn't it only be able to be one number too

X is supposed to be a variable or something, which means it can replace any number. Uh, I think.

I mean, technically, X should be twenty three or whatever, right? [Or twenty four. Or... yeah]

I'm probably not helping, am I? [Pause. Confession time] I'm not really that great at math.

This is not true. Do not listen to him.

No. x can be anything.

What? Oh. Well maybe not this time. But it might be? It's not like it's actually twenty three every time. Not saying that it couldn't be but--

[This requires a different approach that is not talking in circles]

My mom told me before to -- what was it? -- to think of X as an actor or something. It's just one person who can play a bunch of different roles, right? So, X is just one letter that can play a bunch of different roles in math.

It could be? But it's probably not, though.

Really? Cool. So you see that just because it's only one letter doesn't mean it can only be one number, right?

I was using it sorta like an example?

I don't really get it either. Maybe it's because there's not as many letters as there are numbers?

Well, they don't try to give people all completely different names. It's sorta the same thing.

Yeah, well, I guess that's true. But then again, numbers aren't always the same letters.

Well, it's not really that I don't like school [He doesn't like school] it's more like I'm just not really all that good at it, I guess.

Not really. School's not really my thing. It's not a big deal or anything though. I mean, there's other things I'm good at.
