002 - Video - Public Service Announcement

[The video clicks on, and there's Aoko, perched on a stool, that firm set to her mouth almost swallowing her lips in that firm, white line. Someone's going to get it . . . and they're going to get it good.]

I'd like to make a public service announcement.

[Her spine straightens, chin lifting, and almost veritably, she glares at the camera.]

If your new TV or microwave or disco ball or whatever doesn't work . . . maybe you should make sure it's plugged in before calling tech support and fussing at them for half an hour.

And then figuring it out and hanging up on them because you're embarrassed.

Jerks.

[That last part is obviously directed at certain unspecified individuals and not the world as a whole, but Aoko doesn't look as though she's in the mood to specify, bright pink by the end of it all. With a toss of the head, she looks tempted to say more, but flicks the NV firmly off.]

Well. They must've felt really embarrassed for being such idiots.

Is that your job? Taking calls?

Yes.

[And she sounds like she just loves it, doesn't she?]

And maybe they were, but they could at least say "sorry" or something.

Being on the phone with strangers can be kind of weird.

It's really weird.

But mostly they have you reading off of scripts anyway. They don't trust you to come up with the answers yourself.

Sure sounds pretty boring.

But then who am I to talk, right? All I do is put on other people's music.

Ah -- you're a DJ?

For Merlotte's. I do that and book the live entertainment- I help Sam plan the theme parties.

I sort-of DJ for the stadium, too. But my official job there is 'Sound Technician '.

Its a little funny- if you asked me two years ago, what I'd figured I'll be doing for work, I'd have told you something like darkness security. But no one wants to hire someone young as me, for stuff like that. Too much ' liabilities '.

That's really cool, though! It sounds . . . a lot better than what I do.

How old are you? If you don't mind me asking?

[There's an evasive pause, then, confidently] Old enough.

[Because "two, technically" is never a good way to keep your nightclub job.]

[A sharp blink -- because really, how many people answer like that?]

. . . Old enough for what?

Old enough to do whatever I want.

[Why is it that when someone says they're old enough, they actually sound younger?]

[But plainly Aoko has hit upon a touchy subject.]

I just wondered because most people don't have to be a certain age to be a DJ -- I don't think?

But . . . it's fine. I was just curious?

To work overnight shifts, at a club, you've gotta-

...nevermind it, okay?

Oh . . .

[She finds she almost wants to laugh. Another day, another time, she might have pressed it -- that someone too young shouldn't be working in a club. But somehow, compared with everything else they're all going through, it seems so small, so trivial. Who cares about age when you've been yanked from home and are just trying to survive. She manages to bite back the laugh, but lets a small smile through as she replies,]

S'okay. I won't say anything.

It's an easy job and it pays for the apartment I share with my friends..
