Toccata opus I

[A video blips on, a blue sheen covering it as if the grand figure staring intently at the viewer is submerged in water. His eyes are a wide, almost luminescent green, staring, staring with such an intensity it’s almost uncomfortable to watch.

Before one can think to turn the feed off out of creeping fear, the man’s face splits into a mirthful grin. His voice sounding with absolute boyish glee.]

Well, hell-o, hell-o, folks! Brill weather we’re having here, aren’t we?

A little birdie told me this was Canada, shame that. You all must be tucked away in your little igloos, why I bet you've never even been swimming before!

But before I go and offer up any lessons, I need to get my little niche going. So who’s going to tell me a little bit about themselves? I’m Damon Gant, of course, hailing all the wayward down in Los Angeles. A sunny, bright and cheerful place, oh you would probably hate it!

[It's dreadfully drizzly this Sunday morning. He surmises the citizens probably eat and breathe this weather. It seems, however, strangely appropriate that he were to arrive the day after St. Patty's Day, he was after all, the product of most men's hangovers.]

Now, now, step right up, don’t be shy, I promise not to nip. Not even a little bit!

Oh Worthy! Is it really you? My it's like you've aged 50 years since I saw you last.

[Those sunken eyes, those thinning lips, that graying hair...]

Just how're you fairing old boy?

[In other words piss off, I do what I want!]

[Edgeworth glares down at his NV...But the question is, is Gant playing dumb or is he truly dumb? It's entirely possible that he was pulled before his crime was found out...]

Spare me the "pleasantries." I have some questions for you.

[You know better than that Worthy. Gant plays so cleverly it only seems silly to the fools he fools the most. He taps the stylus of his NV checking the time.]

'Fraid I've got to make up for your distinct "lack there of", Worthy. Oooh, but can't it wait?

I've got a train to catch and it's about to get rather loud, if you don't mind.

[And Edgeworth scowls at that. He's perfectly pleasant. To non-Gant people.]

It absolutely cannot wait. If you must speak to me from the train, then so be it, but this matter is pressing.

Oh I suppose if it's pressing you so hard you can't keep it down, poor Worthy.

[He's entering the station now as the train pulls up. He finds a seat towards the back of the car just so they can have a bit of private time. He takes his leisure getting comfortable before he sits back to listen.]

Alright Worthy, I'm all ears for you.

[He glowers more and more the longer it takes. His response is prompt as soon as Gant invites his questions.]

The day and month it was when you left.

[Always the sourpuss. He couldn't let him have just one day without an interrogation, could he? But he certainly wasn't going to be a fool about it. He slides his stylis across the splash-screen, tapping on the LOCK button.]

Now why does a little detail like that matter, Worthy? What would it change?

[He's not questioning the strangeness of the request, so perhaps he already knows about the varying dates in this place...]

A foolish question. What would "time" change? I should think that would be clear.

[A viciously amused smirk etches his mouth. His point was Edgeworth's knowledge in that information, what could it possibly do? Would Worthy pretend to be cordial with him if he claimed to have come from a time before he was a coldblooded murderer?

Would Gant have some epiphany here in this fishbowl and learn to straighten up and fly right? Maybe learn to love like in the princess fairybook tales?]

What I meant, dear Worthy, is what would it change in myself?

[He was a seemingly timeless man, after all.]

More importantly, would it change in you?

[That second question...was a rather good one, loath as he was to admit that Gant was capable of asking good questions. Would Edgeworth treat him any differently if he came from before his crime was found out? Without question, no. But if he came from before he'd committed that terrible deed - What then? It wouldn't negate the fact that he was fully capable of doing just what he'd done once more...

So he avoids that second question, only answers the first.]

As I understand it, your character rather tended to get caught up in a downward spiral. I suspect it would therefore change rather a lot.

Well we all have our little stumbles now and again, don't we Worthy?

[Just a small pry. Like a dagger in Edgeworth's armor of which he took so much pride.]

Some falling farther than others. Hmm, but it takes gusto to dust yourself off and start working your way back up the spiral staircase of prosperity. Just how high have you climbed?

[His lips tighten. His jaw clenches. That particular dagger always sinks deep.]

We're not discussing my situation, Gant. We're discussing yours.

But I just told you, Worthy. Or weren't you listening?

Of course I was listening.

[His voice is short. He supposes that is answer enough. Gant knows perfectly well that Edgeworth knows who he is in truth.]

I'm merely admonishing you to stay focused.

[The tension lightens from him once he see that look of understanding. Always such a good boy. You were his favorite, Worthy. Always have been.]

I haven't been more focused than I am right now. Yes, it's true, honest to goodness. For the first time I'm seeing clearly.

You didn't forget my last words that rainy February, did you? How ever could you.

[He's not certain whether it's fury or fear that makes his stomach clench and his breath quicken.]

...No. I did not. But I assure you that I've ascertained just how incorrect they were, Mr. Gant.

[Those days are gone now, Udgey. Thanks for all the memories, though... Don't worry, you'll be fine! Now you have Wrighto here... and Worthy. With these two around, you can't go wrong... You see, if I listen carefully, I can hear it right now...

The sound of a new beginning!]

For you, Worthy? Tell me then, what's the sound that you're hearing? I had high hopes for you, it can't be all bad.

Or could it be...

[You despise criminals. I can feel it. You and me... we're the same. One day you'll understand. If you want to take them on alone... you'll figure out what's needed! His reminiscing smile broadened as it came to him. Of course the boy would be dwelling on that.]

You truly found out what was needed? Perhaps you can show me. Help me mend the error of my ways. I want to know just how much you've learned.

[There's just a single moment's hesitation in his eyes - a moment of genuine uncertainty - before his expression hardens into anger.]

Your mockery is juvenile and imbecilic.

[But there was just a moment where he did genuinely wonder - what if Gant wasn't being sarcastic, but rather sincere. He'd been a good officer once, after all...]

And you reveal your ignorance once more.

Is that so?

[The insults are likened to water on a duck. He just can't be mad with him. Poor fellow, Gant had put a blight on Edgeworth's career, but he was honestly longing to see if he could tally-ho through it. The thought of his failure would be a truly sorry thing.]

Then I'm just a windless sailboat on the ocean. A ship lost at sea. Why don't you huff and puff and blow me in the right direction?

I've underestimated you rather too many times in the past to buy the thought that you would ever be "lost," Gant.

[He lifts his chin, reminding himself of just everything this man has done.]

I'm sure you've already found out much about this city.
