[The feed comes on to a cat's foot resting over the camera, pawing at it a few times, before the NV in question falls off the table it once rested on and clatters to the tile floor. Footsteps are heard before an upside-down Francis Bonnefoy comes into the frame, grabbing the calico cat and holding her up for a moment.]
Liliane, you know you are not supposed to climb onto the dinner table! [He takes one finger and bops her (admittedly gently) on the nose.] Méchant.
[He's then quick to put her down on the floor and grab for the NV, stuffing it haphazardly into a duffel bag as a knock sounds at the door.] Come in!
[The image from the NV swims as the bag moves, though the majority of the camera is capturing the room instead of the lip of the bag. Enjolras is clearly in view, albeit only partially in the corner of the screen.] Francis! If you please, a word. I respect your feelings on the matter, don't think I don't. But, the answer is no. I cannot stay behind while others go ahead. I've never done that before, and I cannot start now.
[Francis, however, is still clearly visible from the waist up, though only half of his face can really be seen as he turns slightly to face Enjolras. He seems to have been partially expecting this, because the only thing his expression does is change slightly to a frown.]
Enjolron... [France uses the endearing diminutive, attempting to draw empathy from the younger man.] My "feelings" are only part of this. You know it is going to be dangerous. Very dangerous. What cruel sort would I be if I was not worried for you, at least a little?
[The endearment merely seems to irritate Enjolras. He sets his jaw and folds his arms over his breast.] Your feelings are not part of this. Neither is your concern. It isn't that they are unappreciated, they're simply of no value when compared to what we are doing here. Surely you have to understand that.
No val-?! [Francis does not seem pleased with that. He wags his finger at Enjolras, irritated himself.] No value, indeed, when it is your life on the line! My concern is perfectly valid, Enjolras. What we are doing here is serious, but unlike you, I have nothing to lose. You could be killed out there; the Darkness is treacherous enough as it is! Don't you care about your safety at all...?
My Life! My life was contracted and sold by AGI and is now owned by another. Since that is the case, I am not concerned with it. So, why should you be? Besides... I thought you understood. Some things are more important than sentimentnality.
At least let me be concerned! [The older man holds his hands to his chest, sounding more emphatic, now.] I am the embodiment of France, and you are my citizen! You are more important to me than you know, and you always will be. Damn AGI, damn the contract, I will always be concerned about you!
Then be concerned, if that is your will. But you cannot let it cloud your judgement, and I cannot let it change my actions. Am I to stay quiet then, in order to stay safe? Am I to yield to AGI to preserve myself as cattle that they have sold? Is that truly what you want of me?
Says the obstinate man who is rushing into danger headlong! And I am the one without judgment? [It's only then that he pauses, hand combing into his blond hair, almost nervously, as if he feels his words being dismissed and he's trying to steady himself.] Enjolras, I don't want to lose you again. And what we are doing may very well be fatal for some of us. But not for me. I have been through fire, through swords and spears and bullets and god knows what else, and for thousands of years, I have survived. But you? You are mortal. Even with our improvements...
[Enjolras sighs at the reminder that Francis is actually France itself, and does actually care for him.] And where was your concern when the rest of your citizens quietly closed their shutters while we were slaughtered? Perhaps then this love you say you feel for me would have mattered. But... as it stands now I have no use for it.
[For a moment, Francis is stunned into silence. Enjolras' words really sting, almost rubbing salt into the wound, if the grimace is any indication. His next words come out quiet, not very much like him at all.] You know I have no control over any of mes citoyens. I am as much a slave to my leader as you are now. [He's quick to turn around and away from Enjolras, quickly rubbing at his misty eyes when he thinks the boy can not see. Meanwhile he halfheartedly continues packing his duffel, reaching over the camera a bit to do so.
There is a long silence. Frank and candid is in Enjolras' nature, and he does not often regret his words. Yet, when he looks in Francis' eyes... when he looks in FRANCE's eyes, he knows that he was wrong. He swallows and casts his eyes downward.] I... [He swallows.] It doesn't matter, in that it cannot affect my decisions. I won't stay home and safe because of it. But... that doesn't mean... [Oh bloody hell.]
... non. [Francis doesn't seem to notice the camera is on, because he stares right at his NV for a moment, and sighs, before halting his movements and turning his head slightly behind his shoulder.] The point is, you are a part of me, and as such, I have a responsibility to keep you safe, to the best of my ability.
And you are all of me. But I cannot stay put away. You understand, don't you? [There's something softer now, something slightly plaintive that he can't conceal.]
... mais, you cannot expect me to be happy about this. [He releases another sigh.] But I know if I forbid it, you will find a way alone, and that would be worse.
Yes, it is true. I will find a way regardless. And no... I don't expect you to be happy about it. But don't expect me to stay behind because of it.
It is impossible to expect such a thing from you. This does not mean I will not be by your side protecting you as much as I can, until the big event. [It's then that he turns back to his duffel to finish packing it. The moment he notices the recording light on is quite evident from his face - his expression turns from a slight frown to one of pure horror.] Merde! When did this turn-?!
[He scrambles for it, and the feed cuts.]
(( ooc: Enjolras is in red, Francis is in blue. This is basically your last opportunity to find out France’s identity, but alternatively, if you want to log something out just PM me on this account and we can make it happen! ))

[A small pause, then a somewhat sad smile, as small and subtle as it was.]
No wonder I felt so at home with you.
[Amy is responding from the hospital, and it shows in the way her red ringlets are down and her bruised face is covered in bandages.]
Video
[He does, however, look worried again when he sees Amy's state.] What happened to you, Amy? Why are you in the hospital?

[The thought of her being hurt worse, seeing her state, sends a little jolt down his spine, his protective nature over his citizens still in high gear from his talk with Enjolras.]
Why were you outside?
no subject
[No. Her being a Teen Titan was a secret.]
... I needed to feed.

I am simply glad you were not hurt worse. Is there... is there perhaps a way I could see you? If you do not feel up to visitors, I do not want to worsen your condition, mais...

I do feel I have some sort of obligation to protect my friend, oui. Is that all you had to say, m'sieur?

[Hinting politely he doesn't want to talk about it by sidestepping the issue.]

[Just going to casually keep going]

[Yeah, see if he actually tells you anything about the dangerous part.]
Then again, I hold no fondness for AGI's counterpart, either. That has not changed since my first time in the Port.

[He gives a little shrug]
Considering they hold the lives of many, whether or not they are from one country or another seems a moot point. Though I admit I have never really found myself aligned to one nation or another, I have a much higher calling.
no subject
A moot point for the average individual, perhaps - but as you are now well aware, monsieur, I am not the average individual. My people are my life blood, quite truthfully... so not only are they buying and selling the life of a man I hold very dear to my heart, they are also holding a part of me in captivity.
I met someone with that attachment to no nation, before - I would have very much liked to adopt him as mon citoyen.
[Francis does, however, become curious when Xellos mentions his "higher calling".]
And what calling would this be?
no subject
[He gives a cheerful smile]
Well, I am a priest you know.

Is everything all right there?
Video
Oui, mademoiselle - everything is... fine.
[Not.]
I assume you have something else to say? Most people do.
Re: Video
Trying to think how it could be is strange, but that's not as lifechanging as being pulled across universes. Will it go badly for you to have people know?
