So. [Joe sounds particularly cranky and irritated] Me and Roxas we were wondering...

Is it okay for a landlord to just like.... come in your apartment and show somebody else around- while you're still living there?

Who just does that? Let strangers walk around and say nasty things about all our stuff, and how it smells like cats. What if we weren't home, and they took stuff? Or if somebody was sleeping, or naked in the bedroom?

...who do we even go to and complain to about it?

We really need to get serious about moving someplace else. Between this and the rent going way way up for next month, and the heat not coming on till it freezes outside... it's getting crazy.

[Roxas chimes in, sounding nearly as perturbed as his friend.]

They said it was an inspection, but we've been here a couple of years now and I don't think we've ever had one of those. Except when we moved in, maybe.

We've never had a problem here, but they were acting like we're bad renters. But we're fine, we always have been.

...and it does not smell like cats. Xact and Blue are really good and we clean up after them!

I don't know a lot about apartments, but is there somebody higher up than the landlord at the building you could talk to?

That doesn't seem very fair at all, what they did.

I don't know. I don't... think so? Or if there is one we never really met them.

It wasn't fair, but it wasn't true what they said, either. I don't get why they would suddenly stop liking us. We pay on time every month.

Oh no. So this is the truth of 'rent' and 'apartments'... Is the landlord the person who owns the apartment in the first place? Do they own just that apartment, or the whole building? There's got to be rules about this sort of thing...

We never really learned about rules. If there are any. I thought she owned the building?

I mean there's nobody else we've ever seen, we signed a paper in the beginning an it and lets us stay here, and we pay her every month. We do it on time! In the envelope in the mailslot downstairs and everything. She sometimes tapes up a note on the door if we use too much electric, or too much water?

Maybe there was some weird fine print...

I really think you should go out and find out about all the rules both you and her have to adhere to. I'm sure the people in charge of the city would know about this.

Ugh. I'm not even sure where to look for that stuff. [sigh] But we probably should have way before now.

Um. Where would we go to find out? City hall? I hear it's a mess to get down there in sector 2 right now if you're not affiliated anyway, and I'm already on SERO's watch-list. Would they even care?

Probably. [It's gentle, though.] I'm not sure where to look, either, but cities usually function in the same way, so there must be someone who deals with these things. It's just a matter of finding out who.

I have no idea, but there's got to be a way to find out! And besides, if it's someone's job, they'd need to care...

All the other places we looked to stay, last time we went looking for apartments, you had to have paystubs and proofs you made two or three times all the rent for the month, and... checks on backgrounds, only when you're a newcomer you've got no backgrounds.

Ugh. Just thinking about going through all of that looking again is such a pain.

This landlady just had strips with her NV number on the flyer posted up at the laundrymat.

Not in this city, they don't need to care. If you're a newcomer with no munny.

I know a lawyer. I bet he can tell us where we need to get information.

But you have paystubs, now, and a background, right? So maybe moving somewhere new will be a lot easier. I have to wonder if the landlady got a better offer from one of her strips, or something... Money can make people really weird.

That would be good. And is there a library in this city? Law books!

But abandoning citizens... a big group of citizens...

There is something that can be done. We just don't know what, yet.

There's a library, but I dunno if they have that kind of book. I guess I'll call Mr. Godot to start.

I guess we'll ask Godot or Maya's sister, if they're allowed to do that.

I think there's a good chance. My library had some law texts, and it wasn't even a city library, so I think a city library would have... maybe a whole section! It could be worth looking into, if your Mr Godot somehow falls through... I'm sorry I can't help. I don't like this situation at all.

Hopefully they'll know what to do, or at least some good advice... I'm sorry. This isn't right.

What if they brought around bad people to show the apartment, while Namine was here.

Why is she showing other people the apartment, anyway? Does she think we won't be able to pay for it soon?

I mean, two years of it, yeah... so long as the landlord isn't affiliated with SERO, or is someone from AGI who's still got a beef with Sam Merlotte.

So I've noticed. Munny runs everything around here, and we've got just barely enough of it to scrape by.

She probably thinks she can get something better out of it. But that way of thinking is— [He's shaking his head, but the only indication of this is an,] Mmm. Do you have someone you might be able to stay with a little while, until you can find somewhere new?

I'm sure Riku wouldn't mind.

Or maybe Terra and Ventus and Aqua...

Dunno. I'd have to see. Everybody's only got so much couch space. Maybe if we split it up-

It's not about this inspection thing. We don't own the building, so it makes sense they want to make sure everything's okay. But all of a sudden, like we did something bad? There's got to be a reason. And I don't think it has anything to do with the cats.
