[ There is an Ella on the NV today, curled up on the couch with her wolf lounging on the floor near her. ]

I know she has friends here, so I thought I'd mention it. It seems my stepsister Hattie has left the Port.

[ Ella isn't sure how to feel about that, to be honest. She's leaning more towards relieved than any other emotion though. Time to get rid of all her crap! ... though a part of her wonders if she shouldn't wait a few days just in case - the Core has brought people back before. ]

I don't know if Hattie's made any arrangements or anything with anyone else here though, relating to her business, or if she owes anything outstanding.

[ She may be a little glum, at the end of it. She wants to go home too, Core. But at least she can get in touch with Ahiru later about something. ]

[What explanation can there be, indeed. Well, it goes something like this:]

A few months ago the Core forced people to swap bodies. The person who switched with me wound up talking to your sister over the NV - she knew my brother when he was here, and we look alike, you see - and he offered to escort her out, but somehow in all of this she mistook it for a...f-formal proposal.

[That part he's still slightly unclear on, though his imagination (given how well he knows Break) can fill in a lot of those holes on its own.]

I didn't find out until much later...after we switched back and - I tried to call her and explain, but it's nothing that should be done over the NV! It's impersonal enough as it is, and the situation was...ah. I agreed to meet her in person and...

[He turns to look down at the ground.]

And then she...

[.....PREGNANT DRAMATIC PAUSE FOR INTERNAL REFLECTION AND SUBSEQUENT COMEDIC TIMING?!]

[ ADDS HELPFULLY ]

She was the one who proposed, actually!

Why doesn't that surprise me?

I still say you could have said no, regardless of how spoiled she was behaving. Giving in to her whims will only make it worse - as you already discovered.

Still if she's gone, she's gone. Nothing more for it.

I don't...really approve of lying, but in all fairness. Lying to her would have been kinder than letting it come to that.
