Video: People are stupid

[A young girl sits alone in a sparsely decorated room. Her pale skin makes it seem like she might not get out much. The expression she wears is one of annoyance. She speaks in a soft voice, with a faint hint of a German accent to it.]

Been paying attention to the news recently. Looks like a lot of people don't like those of us from other worlds. I guess I can understand it. They're jealous. They are just weak, normal people. If enough 'Newcomers' show up, why would we even need people who can't do anything? Those sort of people would just be in the way, worthless and having to be taken care of by us special people.

[Its an odd sort of speech for a girl her age to be giving, but there weren't too many normal people dragged here by the Core, she was likely no exception.]

That is probably what they are thinking. And that is because they're stupid. Lots of people are stupid, I've noticed. You have to be stupid to think that pushing a bunch of people who have all sorts of interesting abilities around isn't going to end badly for you. I'm sure that even someone like me could handle some of them, and I am still merely a child. I don't like hurting people...

[She's a surprisingly good liar!]

...But if anyone ever tried to attack me, I wouldn't let them. I intend to not die in my childhood if I can help it. Though, I heard an interesting rumor. That supposedly, if you kill a Newcomer they don't stay dead. That can't be true. If that is the case, then people are even stupider then I thought. Kill someone, and they come back and just kill you back? Stupid.

[She looks annoyed that anyone that dumb could possibly exist.]

Not sure why I even bothered with this. I guess I am just in a bad mood tonight.

[The feed closes almost immediately after she is done speaking.]

[Admittedly, this is something Warsman has been thinking about a lot; it's bothered him that the hostility against Newcomers here is something he's just accepted, shouldered without questioning it. Hatred and fear and mockery have scabbed over thinner skin across the years he's been subjected to them. Being reminded that he's not the only one being affected presents something of a reality check- he can't possibly stand by and let other people be poisoned by that atmosphere too.

Not for the first time he looks at Lieselotte and thinks about himself at her age. Would he- would Niko- have said something similar?]

You shouldn't have to think about trying to survive at your age.

Why are you in a bad mood?

Oh, it is you again. The one that called themselves Warsman. I am not sure why my mood is so bad. Perhaps I am just finally starting to realize what a terrible place I call home now.

It can seem like one of the worst places in the universe some days, but things could be a lot worse.

Is there anything I could do to make things easier for you?

I will be fine. Unless someone decides to hate me just because I am from somewhere else. Then, you can punch the person bothering me. That would help.

With pleasure. I could never just stand by and let someone bully a little girl.

I heard that the native citizens also had powers.

[ Insofar as powers exists. She's seen a few extraordinary things since being here, but... it's still strange. ]

You aren't the only one to tell me that. I haven't had much chance to learn about this world, admittedly. I have kept mostly to myself and didn't even realize that. But most of what I have learned has made me dislike it.

[ There is, admittedly, a lot to dislike. ]

How long have you been here for?

Not long. A few months, maybe. I try to keep mostly to myself. I am wondering if I am going to keep being able to do so, though.

You're worried about something?

At first I thought this place was going to be a good place to live. I didn't even care I wasn't born here. But it seems much worse then what I left behind. I hate that. People always find a way to ruin things.

You heard about the monsters and still thought that this city would be a good place to live?!

There are monsters out at night no matter where you live. They're just more obvious here.

Where I'm from, I wasn't worried about being eaten after dark.

I suppose. I always did feel more comfortable at night, but I don't feel any less safe here. The things that want to hurt you are just a lot more obvious in a place like this.

Oh, can you fight them or something? Is that why you don't mind it?

A little. I prefer not to if I can help it. But I say I don't feel less safe here because I tend to keep to myself anyway. I have a place to hide from the things out there now so I don't need to be outside when it is dangerous anymore.

And what, you didn't have a home in the world where you're from?

I don't have one here, either. I merely have a safe place to be when the sun is down.

What do you mean, you don't have a home?

It is simple. I have someone that is letting me stay with them, but I barely know them. It is not a home. It is just a shelter so I don't have to worry about the darkness every night.

What matters is that you're not out on the streets. You can still call it a home.

I guess we don't agree on what a home is. I am not ungrateful to be indoors when the darkness comes. But it is a shelter, nothing more.

Then maybe you ought to do something to make it a better place to live. Who are you living with?

I don't know him very well. Sort of a scruffy looking fellow, but he doesn't seem dangerous, so I don't distrust him. I believe his name was...Larry? Larry something. Bartz, I think. Or something like this. I may not have that correct. I rarely have reason to call him by name, you see.

[ Now, now, where had she heard a name like that before...? It takes her a moment before she remembers - that foolish man who'd talked in circles with her when she had first arrived here in the city. Fool. ]

Butz? That sounds like it could be right, I was not entirely sure I remembered. As I said, I've little reason to use his full name. You sound as if you are familiar with him.

He thinks we're acquainted. We're not. [ Not really. ] He's a fool. How can you stand him?

It is easy, considering the nature of this city. I do not have a place to hide from the darkness. He offered to share his with me. It is easy to tolerate someone when the alternative is death.

And you couldn't find someone less foolish to tolerate?

Perhaps in time, I shall. But he was the one that was there when I didn't have anywhere else to stay. Foolish or not.

Just how did you meet him, anyway?

[There's a slight delay before she responds.]

Was looking for someone. Asked him if he'd seen then. It came up I didn't have anywhere else to go, so he offered to let me stay. I didn't mind. It is nice not having to wonder where you'd be sleeping that night.

Who was this 'someone'?

If you must know, it was my sister. I believe I was unable to find her because she simply doesn't exist here anymore.

You mean that she was here in this city before?

She was. But she no longer is. It was during my search for her that I ran into the man you seem to dislike. I simply chose to ask someone who would offer their home to me.

... Well, you should continue interacting with him as little as possible. [ A beat. ] He seems the unscrupulous sort.

Nobody's worthless. Whether they have powers or not doesn't change that.

I am not sure I agree, but I wasn't actually saying the people that live here were. Just that it was probably what they were afraid of. Being outdone by people from other worlds.

The natives all have powers, too.

And only some Newcomers come back to life.

That makes even less sense then. If they have their own powers, why hate those of us who don't even want to be here?
