For those of you who knew my nephew Zuko, he disappeared this morning. It was as if he vanished, not a trace of him anywhere.

[He had made an effort of looking]

I think that it will probably be for the best, he has much work to do back home.

[It is a bittersweet parting. He was glad to have family here, but he would rather Zuko be off fufilling his destiny]

I told him what I knew from my own world. He came from a time when he had just been hit by lightning, I wished to assure him that things got better and those at home had come out safe.

Hit by--? Well. [He sounds a little disbelieving, but it's not the strangest thing he's heard this week.] No wonder you thought he needed the reassurance. Do you suppose it'll help him any when he gets back?

Well, he will be saved anyway. The reassurance was more for here so that it wouldn't eat at him while he was in Sirens Port.

[He can produce lightning from his hands, so its not like he found it unusual]

Hmm. That does make sense, I suppose. I must admit, even I'm unsure as to how productive I could be here if I knew I could be whisked away to certain death at any moment.

Precisely, it would relieve him to know that things would be better and that he had accomplished his goal.

So he will get things right? You're sure of it?

He is my nephew. Like all of us, he will make some mistakes, but I have faith that he will lead the world into a better place.

[A pause- then he finds himself asking:] Doesn't it bother you? The thought that he might choose to stray instead?

Once my nephew sets himself to a course, it is very difficult to change his mind. He made a decision to improve the world and seek balance. Eventually the older generation must place its faith in the younger.

... hmm. Perhaps the representatives of the "younger generation" in your world are shining beacons of productivity and intelligence, but I've very rarely met anyone under the age of thirty I could rely on.

You are sounding like a grumpy old man.

[Iroh can't see, but he flushes a little- he also can't quite stop himself from sounding embarrassed.]

I don't think I've said anything strictly untrue.

[Iroh laughs heartily]

I see. Well you might be surprised, the young are full of promise.

Aren't you a little biased, considering that your nephew is in their number?

I know many here which rise to the challenges. You simply need to keep your eyes open to them.

Oh, my eyes are open, believe me. If seeing is believing, I'll have to remain a cynic.

I'll keep that in mind. No young whippersnappers on the old man's lawn.

[Because if old people can't joke about being old, who can?]
