003: Video

[It's after the night siren and Bruce is looking frazzled, irritated, and... like he forgot that he'd been getting ready to sleep, since he's wearing boxers and glasses and apparently nothing else. As he settles his NV, a pair of mice skitter across the desk he's set it on. There are little movements in the background and Bruce has to stop and hop around, cursing under his breath as something apparently runs over his foot.]

Okay, look, the Darkness thing I'm up on, but is it common for random objects like, say, my pillow to turn into mice?

[ Jesse is a little taken aback at that offer. He's so used of just taking care of himself that he honestly forgets adults like to look after him, even strangers. Like Sam and Dean, when they visited him, pretending to be officers.

But he knows that he doesn't have a choice but to accept help from others. He can take care of himself in some ways, but as long as the law says he's underage, he has to accept that help. ]

Okay. Thanks, I'll find a way to pay you back.

I know how to use a stove, so I've been making mostly soup and hot dogs for lunch and dinner. I like waffles for breakfast.

[Bruce tries not to look appalled.]

Yeah... that's... at least you aren't going hungry. Maybe I'll drop some groceries off when I come by too. Do you have a microwave?

[ Hey, he eats out too . . . at MacDonalds, 'cause he loves the fries. ]

Yeah, I have that too.

[The fries are the only saving grace.]

Okay. Is there any food you hate? Anything you really like?

Olives and broccoli aren't my favorites, they taste weird. [ Never mind that he never ate the latter but whatever. ] I don't mind a lot of food. Pretzels and Shepard's Pies are my favorites.

Got it. Then I'll come by tomorrow.

Don't you get kind of lonely on your own? [Says the guy who definitely gets lonely on his own even with an adult's maturity to handle it.]

[ That's a good question. Jesse had friends in school. He goes home immediately after school or soccer practice, but it's not like he's alone or anything. He knows how to make friends.

But when you realize you are not quite human, that you are so dangerous even angels fear you, it sort of takes the fun out of meeting new people. He'll talk to them, but there's the question hovering over him, What if? What if they are something else? What if they know what Jesse is, and if they do, what will they do next?

So yes, he feels lonely, but being an Antichrist is a lonely path. ]

A little bit. I miss my parents.

[Bruce knows from lonely and isolated and he's asked himself those same what if they know? questions over the past few years. If he knew that Jesse has to live with that, his heart might break a little.]

How about school? You could make some friends your age.

I was thinking of school. [ It'll be nice to actually have a pace of normalcy. ] But I know school is out for the summer.

Summer will be over soon.

I know. I think it starts in September or August. I don't know. Do I need a legal guardian in order to go to school? My parents aren't here.

[hulkbusted]

[That's a remarkably intelligent question and Bruce frowns at the screen.] How old did you say you were?

[ He has his moments. ]

I'm eleven.

[hulkbusted]

Let me look into it. The way this place sucks people in randomly there have to be processes in place for unaccompanied minors.

Thanks, Bruce. I don't know where to look.

[ This is the grown up stuff he has no idea on how to handle. ]

Neither do I, but I can do bureaucracy. We'll get it worked out and you can hang out with people more your age.

Do you hang out with people your age?

[hulkbusted]

Sometimes, when I can, but I have friends who are all ages. [Thinking of everyone from Tony to Kevin to Scatach.]

Back home, all of my friends were around my age. I didn't really talk to grown-ups very much before I came here. [ Or when it was revealed he was half demon, but whatever. ]

I think that's how it's supposed to be. You and your friends are learning how to be kids and someday adults together. It's not like it's easy being young. It's even harder when you're on your own.

[therightchoice]

[ And now this talk is making Jesse sad again, as he will never see his friends again, let alone grow up beside them. ]

I never thought being young as hard.

Maybe it was just me. [He shrugs.] I don't spend much time with kids who aren't patients.

Are you working as a doctor now?

[hulkbusted]

No, I'll help out where it's needed, but I'm going to teach physics and biochem at SPU when the fall term starts.

[therightchoice]

[ Now, Jesse knows little to nothing about colleges and careers and stuff, but it even to him sounds so crazy to hear someone being both a doctor and biochemist and a physicist at the same time. ]

I have no idea what to do when I grow up.
