[a sour taste in his mouth, and a tightening in his stomach. The shifter anger is boiling under his skin again, the old, familiar feel of betrayal. At least he wasn't too deep in this time; at least he was only starting to think he'd met someone worthwhile.

Why do I even try anymore? Reach out your hand and they use it to pull you under. How many times does a dog have to keep gettin' kicked in the ribs to remember not to fucking try and lick their hand?]
