BUGS IN THE BRAIN, SAY SP GENERAL HOSPITAL SURGEONS

One of Siren’s Port General Hospital’s leading brain surgeons says the bug that’s been going around might actually be a bug.

“We noticed, early on, that a specific part of the brain was being affected by this disease,” Doctor Kenzo Tenma, a Newcomer Neuro-Surgeon and an AGI affiliate, told reporters yesterday. “When one of the first patients brought into the hospital started to show symptoms of acute brain damage, it was decided that we needed to take scans of her brain, to see what might be happening.”

The first patient treated after having her brain scanned was none other than Mrs. Roberta Stevenson, the mother of the “Patient Zero” groom who fell ill, along with the rest of his wedding party, a few hours after the reception ended on their wedding day. Mrs. Stevenson’s medical condition has been listed as “stable” at SP General, with her family refusing to comment. When asked to elaborate on her condition, Doctor Tenma stated that due to doctor/patient confidentiality, he could not reveal more when it comes to her health. Instead, he gave this paper news that it is glad to hear.

“After seeing the scans, we noticed that a large part was being affected. It’s a little complicated, but basically, the area of the brain that handles emotions, such as anger, joy, sadness, human empathy and, yes, guilt… it was all being targeted and deteriorating rapidly,” Doctor Grant, Head of Surgery, told us. “The plan was made to operate as soon as possible, and put our best doctors on it.”

According to the Health Department, an investigation has begun to see how many have been getting sick from what people are calling a virus-like “flu”. This disease that has had a noticeable outbreak among both Newcomers and citizens has been taking lives, and putting thousands of others into the hospitals and other quarantined sections. “We’re doing pretty good,” Said Allison Marmeck, a mother of two, who has been staying in the quarantine section set up in the stadium. “Doctors coming in and out, enough food and water; I’m proud to be a Siren’s Port citizen right now. They’re taking care of us right.”

And yet, astonishing new reports have been coming back about this ‘super virus’.

“There was something a little weird when we operated on her. When I took a closer look, it looked a little like… a bug was in her brain. Not a big bug! We collected some damaged tissue, and looked at the sample under a microscope. That’s when we found it. It looked like a piece of nanotechnology, something we’d never seen before, obviously. So we sent it to SERO,” Doctor Tenma finished out the interview with that remark before a press conference had been thrown by SERO to counter any claims of responsibility.

“If we had known about this, we could have done something to prevent it sooner,” Gary Elwes, head of SERO’s Nanotechnology and Bio-Engineering Department, told the news at the press conference. “We looked at the now numerous samples of nanites that were coming in, and none of them are the kind that we make. We don’t use the same model or anything. Needless to say, we’d like to meet whoever produced these.”

General outcry among the populace has been noted by many higher ups in government, and within the leading corporations. Many are calling out for an immediate, full investigation into nanotech engineering, and those who have been working on it. The City Health Department, as well as Siren’s Port’s Center for Disease Control, reassure the public that the disease most Port Citizens have caught is still an advanced flu strain, and should not cause any kind of lasting brain damage.

“This is just not a normal flu virus we’re working with. We can probably make a cure, now, out of this whole thing, but the what we’re working on now will combat the original nanotech, the ‘Virus’s Virus’, not the evolved form of influenza that’s been plaguing everyone else. It should still work to immediately downgrade the 'super-flu' into its common form, but people have to be patient,” Wendy Izzard, a disease specialist working for SERO out of a satellite Medical Center, told us today. “These nanites are just the beginning, and we highly doubt that anyone beyond the initial contaminated group is at risk of finding micro-machinery leeching at their brain. Someone very advanced with biotechnologies developed some kind of smart bug, and that bug ‘taught’ the viral RNA strain of common flu to behave like it, so that it would then spread organically. It’s learning how to evolve faster than we are. So, now, we need to predict what it will do, not what it has done.”

Curiously, there have been more questions asked about what to name this disease, than what it might do in the future, or concerns about similar nanotechnologies in unknown development. A call into the CDC has told us that the outbreak has been nicknamed several things, including “Guity Grippe”, but the real name of this virus is less glamorous; H5N10, or the “Culpa Flu”.

SERO has released a statement that their doctors are actively “working on the cure, research is nearing a breakthrough, and we should have the first doses out in a few days”. The public is asked to keep calm, and to know that everyone will get a cure, but not all at once. Those in critical condition at the hospitals will be given the cure first, and then distribution will move on from there. Hopefully, there won’t be as many riots as there were when “Foboxitin” came onto the market, but the government is preparing for better crowd control when a cure is released.
