[The camera focuses on five little patchwork mice in a cage. It remains focused on them as Stein tries to pick up a little extra cash.]

[Crona is not the sort of person who would be able to manage surviving alone, and it would be poor form to let a student (even a trial student) starve or be mauled by monsters. Besides, he needs more data on the black blood.]

Well... I can't imagine that you'll get a job, and my place has enough room for you and your weapon.

[His salary doesn't pay much, but it might be enough for three, if they're careful.]

[Just,] Oh. [Those are some nice facts and all, but surely they're only that: facts. Good, scary Professor Stein surely wouldn't welcome sad, wrong Crona into his 'place.']

So, you'll stay with me. [Not a question.]

R- [Wow.] Really? What do you want me to do?

You don't need to do anything, Crona. I'll come and get you.

[Enough silence passes that it's Ragnarok who speaks up.]

Gupi, phahahaha! Nice job, Patchy Doc, Crona's turned to stone or something. You really gonna come? Crona's nice and snug in a corner in 901 at this starter place.

[Stein had been wondering when the demon sword would show.]

901? I'll be there soon.

We'll be waiting, [Ragnarok says, pseudo-saccharine. Crona just makes an anxious sound. That's as good as it's going to get.]

[And, eventually, someone knocks on the door of 901.]

[It takes a moment for Crona's strained voice to come.] Come in!

[Opening the door seems a little overwhelming right now. Crona would much rather stay in the corner to the right of the door.]

[And in comes Stein.]

Crona?

[Sounding small: ] Yes. [Crona's a straight shot to the right, back against the corner, arms around knees.] You came all this way.

[He smiles, crouching down to Crona's level.]

I did.

Now, do you have anything here that we need to pack up?

Oh - no. [There's some instinctive shrinking, further against the wall, but that's just Crona's way.] It's just us.

That makes it easier. Come on, let's turn in your key.

[Obediently, Crona wobbles into a standing position, straightening out his clothing before taking his habitual stance of clinging to one arm with the opposite hand.] 'Kay.

Professor Stein?

Yes, Crona?

I don't understand. I'm sorry— I don't understand why you're taking me with you. We're not at the academy any more. Miss Marie isn't here. [Some wilting.] Lady Medusa isn't here. So I don't understand...

[Crona knows Marie, and that is a bit of a surprise. Timelines again, because Marie's only just gotten back to Death City.]

Someone needs to take care of you. [Obligation. Maybe a bit of pity, even.]

[Crona certainly can't deny it, but it's not a very nice feeling.] I don't take up very much space - or eat a lot - I'm very quiet...

I'm sure you are. There's no shame in needing help, Crona.

Right, [Crona says, though it's abrupt in a hesitant sort of way.] Thank you. I'll follow you.

[This, Stein thinks, is going to be interesting.]

Well then, let's go.

Yes. [This comes just before a great sigh, of either stress or resignation. Since it's Crona, probably both.

Crona has no problem with leaving behind the apartment as it is, but for some reason feels apprehensive about returning the key. Still, it's relatively easy once he finally deals with it, and he follows Stein while keeping his wide-eyed stare on the ground.]

[It's a fairly long walk to Stein's apartment, across the city. Stein remains quiet.]
