[Oh no. Jittery heart is going into overdrive. Crona's trying desperately to untangle his tongue.]

P- P- P- P- Pro— [Deeeeep breath, and then this comes out in a rush.] —fessor Stein!

[Exhale.]

[Again, unexpected. He can't quiet place the voice, wasn't aware that any of his students except Soul were here.]

I am. There aren't many of us here. [And his mental dredging has pulled up a face to go with that hesitant sound. Medusa's child. His tone is a bit softer when he picks his words up again, not wanting to spook the child.]

Crona, wasn't it?

['Many of us,' he said - does that mean—? There could be other people, and amongst those other people there could be Maka - but Crona puts forth a lot of effort into beating that thought down. There's no point in hoping for the impossible.

Crona had thought that being recognized would be more nerve-wracking, but in fact it helps. Though unseen, Crona's body deflates with a long sigh.]

[And Maka is one of the first people he thinks about, after getting confirmation of Crona's identity. It's a pity the girl isn't here, she'd been the one who seemed most able to calm Crona.]

Soul's here. You remember him, I'm sure.

Other than him, it's just you, me, and the demon sword.

[Soul's here. Then Maka must be! It's only logical -

But it's not true, and Crona's heart sinks appropriately.]

Understandable. [And this must be a confusion of timelines, because he barely knows the child, but Crona knows him well enough to recognize and contact him.]

We - We're in an apartment. They said we could stay here for a month. I didn't know where anything was or who anyone was...

[And it's wrong for Crona to cling like this, what a bad child, but all things considered, it's hard to help.]

[Crona is not the sort of person who would be able to manage surviving alone, and it would be poor form to let a student (even a trial student) starve or be mauled by monsters. Besides, he needs more data on the black blood.]

[Enough silence passes that it's Ragnarok who speaks up.]

Gupi, phahahaha! Nice job, Patchy Doc, Crona's turned to stone or something. You really gonna come? Crona's nice and snug in a corner in 901 at this starter place.

[Stein had been wondering when the demon sword would show.]

901? I'll be there soon.

We'll be waiting, [Ragnarok says, pseudo-saccharine. Crona just makes an anxious sound. That's as good as it's going to get.]

[And, eventually, someone knocks on the door of 901.]

[It takes a moment for Crona's strained voice to come.] Come in!

[Opening the door seems a little overwhelming right now. Crona would much rather stay in the corner to the right of the door.]

[And in comes Stein.]

Crona?

[Sounding small: ] Yes. [Crona's a straight shot to the right, back against the corner, arms around knees.] You came all this way.

[He smiles, crouching down to Crona's level.]

I did.

Now, do you have anything here that we need to pack up?

Oh - no. [There's some instinctive shrinking, further against the wall, but that's just Crona's way.] It's just us.

[Obediently, Crona wobbles into a standing position, straightening out his clothing before taking his habitual stance of clinging to one arm with the opposite hand.] 'Kay.
