Time is not a factor. Eventually, souls that are where they do not belong, become corrupt, lose what connection with the mortal world that they have, and become destructive and violent.

Perhaps it is not him 'losing' it, but a peek into what the future will bring.

That's not true. Maybe that's how it is where you're from, but not in my world. He's a vampire. He has a soul - but -- it's because of a curse. And if he has a moment of true happiness, it's gone, and he's not a man anymore. He becomes this really scary demon. Which is what vampires are, demons setting up shop in a human body, but it's his body, and his soul is in it, and it needs a way to stay there. Not just by way of the curse, but in a permanent non-breaking sense.

Once a soul has left a body, it should not be returned. The damage is... extensive. If it is so easy for it to be removed, then that says it should not have been there in the first place.

Maybe that's not how it works in our world, then, because his soul is fine. It's when he doesn't have it that things get all bad and murdery. He was born a human. He was murdered and turned into a vampire. The gypsies just... gave him his soul back. But it's conditional! He can lose it. That's the part I'm trying to fix.

Souls are not transient and if they are, then there is damage. A soul either is in its mortal body or it is not.

To fling it about, to bind it to a demon, will eventually destroy it. It needs to be cleansed, and reaped.

That's the wrong answer. It can't be cleansed and reaped! He'll be a monster. He won't be Angel anymore. It is in its mortal body. It's just -- it's like timeshare with a demon? Only he's beat the demon part back. He's in control. If you met him, you might get it. Right now? You're not. His soul isn't going to be cleansed. It's not going to be reaped, either. Those aren't the options.
