Greetings, Siren's Port.

Since I arrived here, I have found found my operations disrupted on several occasions by the cavalier interference of magic from a variety of sources. This is disturbing, painful, largely inexplicable, and on the whole quite unacceptable. I wish to learn more about magic, both to further my own understanding and in the interests of better protecting myself and my residents.

It is my understanding that there are many different systems of magic from various worlds represented here, which function in a variety of different ways. Further, it appears that many of these systems including 'warding' provisions, which provide localized magical protection.

I wish to learn to compose wards in as many systems as possible. Additionally, I would like to observe magic performed - actual magic, however that may be defined, but not merely core-granted abilities - in order to learn more.

I would deeply appreciate any assistance with either of these endeavors, and would be happy to provide compensation in the form of temporary living quarters, free gourmet meals, or small diamonds.

Oh, wonderful!

First it was time, and then just the other day it was space. These things seem to happen all over the island but as I am an extremely scientifically sensitive piece of architecture they have been rather more disruptive for me than for more anthropoid persons.

I'm sad to say the problem you encountered with space was the fault of someone from my world. [Or a world almost the same as her own. Whatever.] I can definitely help you with wards against magic like his or anyone else I'm familiar with.

[Serious look.] I'll be honest: I can't guarantee you'll be protected from absolutely everything. Magic is tricky and slippery. It likes to break the rules and defy all reason. [Kinda like Loki.] But I'll do my best, I promise you that!

I know. I mean, I know who it was, not that you knew him, but that would be very lovely!

Nothing can ever be perfectly guaranteed, but I hope taking precautions will help.

I think one-on-one would be best at first, to prevent confounding variables. If you'd like to meet up, however, I would be happy to host such an event!

Provided we are not discussing the parasitic sacrament of the lazarus symbiont, which is perfectly well founding in biological processes, but rather the vague and pre-imperial notion of miracles, then yes, I believe they would most likely qualify.

But more generally, I meant, why in Reason's name should humans be the standard that everything else ought to try by way of comparison?

Would it? I think most organics would be horrified by the loss of mobility. Not to mention the sudden self-awareness that comes with programming analytics.

But that's wasn't my point, I'm not that special either.

To understand what it is that makes someone who they are. At the end, she tells herself what she learned, and waits for the next century.

I think everything is worth trying at least once.

That's fine, I suppose, if someone wants to, if they're close enough or vast enough to handle it.

But you wouldn't - you wouldn't turn a human into a cricket, with all the mental and physical limitations that implies, and expect them not to be profoundly disturbed at the loss of so much of what does make them their own self. And perhaps the leaping might be fun, but it wouldn't make up for the loss of art, or introspection, or the capacity to think in language.

Becoming human would be horrifying for me, if it could even be said to happen to me at all, rather than replacing me with a jumbled organic facsimile.

But crickets do have all of that! Just because it's not the same as a human doesn't mean they don't have it at all. [Smiles.]

No, they don't, not as I'm using the words. Communication? Yes, certainly. Syntactical language? No. Thinking in cricket signals is not language in the strict sense, neither is the way I think - though I can translate to it, obviously.

That would be...tolerable, but not pleasant. If I were still myself in any meaningful way, I would constantly wish to perform my duties as a house, and be thwarted to find I was not one.

I talk to crickets all the time. You just need to listen really really close. [Nods.]

But you could replace those feelings by wanting to perform duties as a person! So you don't feel like doing things as a house.

But then I wouldn't be me at all!
