I fear I may grow so bored of the things that I'd turn them out to fend on their own, as they do in Antiva. And Anders... would not like that. [Considering that most creatures left out in the darkness are transformed by it - a fate that seems worse than outright death. In his own way he's trying to make sure the animals get looked after, even if Zevran himself is uncertain of how proceed.
