2nd Flight - [Video]

[It's the dimly lit interior of Astrid and Hiccup's apartment. The only light comes from the television set as it broadcasts the news, right before abruptly switching to some random cartoons.

It might become apparent then that there's someone there watching, a large black shape occupying most of the couch, large green eyes staring intently at the tube. A stubby claw presses the remote that sits in front of it, and the dragon looks up from the buttons to the screen as the images change.

He does this a few times, apparently finding nothing of interest. One channel he flips to blares some rather loud noise that gives him enough of a start that Toothless hops back, tipping the couch over. Hissing, he peers his head around one end before stepping back towards the fallen remote, giving it another prod. Once again, another noisy channel, but rather than go into hiding again, Toothless growls at the remote before giving it another whack.

The channel changes back to the news, but the remote certainly has seen better days, as that's a lot more pieces than it started with. Oops.

The dragon's...just going to slink off- no one saw that doo-dee-doo...]

[Okay, he has to grin at all this. It's just too cute. Here's the yellow human, Toothless. Only he's not yellow now. Hm.]

Nothing good on, huh?

[His head lifts at that- the voice is familiar. By now he's learned where to expect the source of these phantom voices when he hasn't sensed anyone around, so he wanders over towards his NV, green eye peering into the screen.

That's...odd. You sound like the yellow one, but you're definitely not...yellow.

Toothless tilts his head, looking a bit confused.]

[ He says this in his normal draconic language. So here's Aurican in human form! ]

Human things aren't always dragon safe.

[Whoa, what. That earns a double-take from Toothless. He tilts his head confusedly.]

[ Heh. ]

Hello, Toothless. It's Aurican.

[What is this witchcraft.

The dragon blinks, emitting a short growl in surprise.

Gold one? -but not. How?]

I have always had the power to turn human. It's a small gift of mine. I would speak to you in my real form, but that isn't possible nowadays.

[That's really something! There were definitely no dragons back home who could do that.

Makes easy to hide.

He frowns slightly at the latter.

...still hunted?]

For burning down the hunting grounds, yes.

[His ears perk at that, but he stills any questions as to why he hadn't been invited. Even if he'd known, he'd been more of a liability- he still can't fly on his own, and Hiccup still isn't at his best in piloting. He looks down sadly.

Hide forever?]

I do not think I can handle in hiding forever.

[ This means that he might turn himself in, but that requires of ignoring his pride. ]

[Not good.

The dragon agreed at that. Hiding forever didn't seem very practical a way to live.]

No, it's not.

But we have to make the best of things that are available to us. That is how we survive.

[ Whether he means dragons or Newcomers is unclear, even to Aurican. ]

[He tilts his head, grunting his agreement. The dragon knows that well from experience, it's how a unlikely friendship became forged between former enemies, after all.]

...Toothless help?]

[Soft chuckle is soft.]

Wee Toothless, ye've discovered the usefulness of the noisebox!

[Noteworthy Note: Sheila doesn't like TV that much.]

[He knows that voice well enough by now, and once he slinks over to his NV-fishy, he gives a few grunts in a talky sort of way, obviously not holding much love for said television. At least when it wasn't behaving, anyway.]

[Sheila's had few rounds with it herself.]

If ye care to try again, ye shall find a show about animals much like thee.

[He tilts his head curiously. Granted he understood, he would have given it a try...if the remote was in working order, anyway.]

Mayhaps ye might prod the buttons on the box above the TV?

[Astrid and Hiccup are never going to invite her for dinner with advice like that, are they?]

[Haha, probably not!

Toothless peers back at the television- he's heard the Tee-Vee word used enough to know it's got something to do with the buzzy box, anyway.

Looking back to his NV, he picks it up in his mouth to carry over by the set, putting it down on the floor as he sniffs at the television screen.]

[She's rather failing at being a Mature Adult, she is.]

Gently, dear dragon!

[The dragon draws his head back, the television rocking slightly as it comes back into balance after being nudged.

Glancing back at the NV, Toothless gives a little gurgle before poking around the television again. He draws back his head after going a little too far back, sneezing from the dust.]

[That is no the sound of a gentlewoman you hear, giggling her brains out, in the background.

Not at all.]

Uh-uh! Almost!

[The on button looks to be an inch to the left of his snoot via Sheila's perspective.]

[Shaking his head a little, Toothless peers back at the giggling woman. What's so funny?

He supposes he'll never understand these people. Back to he TV it is. He pokes about again, finally coming close enough to the button that he hits it with his snout. The image on the television screen switches, showing some commercial about some handy-dandy floor scrubber.

The dragon looks at the screen. Oh, so that thingy changes it too, does it?]

[Your very existence is adorable, Toothless.

She applauds his cleverness, grinning all the while.]

Two more, dear! Thou hast it now!

[Shaking his head and looking perhaps the tiniest bit smug at such praise, he glances from NV to the channel-changing box again before nosing it again, and then once more after finding nothing especially interesting.]

[He's doing quite well! At least he is in Sheila's estimation.]

'Tis the twenty-third channel! There art a documentary about iguanas.

[Toothless lets out something of a grumble as he pokes at the box again. Not like he knows how to count, or even what numbers are, really. Things were always measured to him in terms of a lot and a little.]

[She coos once more at his cleverness.]

perhaps two more down?

[The number on the box says 29]

[He pauses a moment to look at the television again, watching ridiculously bright-colored figures run about and chatter inanely.

Shaking his head, he gives it nudges the button a couple more times.]

[And up pops the nature documentary - now displaying a gila monster in full flail, running toward the screen!]

[The dragon jerks his head up at that, eyes widening before he hisses, backing away from the screen and the angry lizard upon it.]

[Sheila makes a gentle tisking sound.]

'Tis only an image upon the screen. It carries no smell, doth thou not note?

[The image promptly changes to one of a monitor lizard climbing up a tree in slow-motion.]

[Toothless tilts his head as the pictures switch, grunting in surprise before he eases out of his tensed posture and back towards the screen.]

Does thou now see? It cannot harm thee.

And if the books I hath read are correct, these wee lizards art the progeny of thy people.

[Finally convinced the lizards on the screen aren't going to cause any trouble, Toothless moves to sit down in front of the television to watch them.]

[Sheila's smile is of total satisfaction. She'll leave him to watch the animals in silence for a bit, as onscreen a lizard extends its tongue and slaps a fly out of the sky.]

[And Toothless watches, wide-eyed. Funny how some of these lizards reminded him of dragons he knew back home.]
